H&R 686 Loading Gate opens during firing

When I fire the loading gate opens. What I have read is the loading gate spring and ball is missing. I have ordered these items. Just wondering if this is a diy or should take it to a smith. Anyone fixed this problem? Thanks
it is a 686 with both cylinders 12 inch barrel

If you can slip the loading gate out without dissembling the gun, you may be able to put the ball & spring back in and compress them with a small screwdriver or something while sliding the loading gate back in?
I don't know?


But I do know if you have to take the trigger guard and lock-work out of the frame to replace it?

Find a gunsmith.
You don't want to go there on the kitchen table, I can assure you!!!

IIRC, the spring and detent ball serve both to retain and tension the loading gate. Insert the spring and ball, then use a small punch or screwdriver to hold them while you push the gate into place. This is best done under a piece of cloth to keep the ball from departing for the darkest corner.
