This may sound like a noob question, but can H4831SC be substituted for H4831? I was given a pound of H4831SC, and would like to use it for .243 Win. loads. I was also given a pound of H380, I know there are loads for that in .243, and a partial bottle of Win 760, and again I know that will work.
I am not familiar with either of these Hodgdon powders, having stuck to BL-C(2) or IMR powders for many years.
If you have a pet .243 load for 80, 95 or 100 grainers, I wouldn't mind hearing of it. I am working up deer loads for a friend who just got an Axis (1:9.25 twist) in .243.

This is the gun (and guy) we are loading for:

No, we didn't just take the gun out of the box and start shooting. I mounted the scope, he didn't have a case for it when he gave it to me to mount. The gun shot well with factory 100 gr. WIn. and Federal, but I believe I can load up some rounds that will be as accurate, and lighter on his shoulder. (He has RA)

I stuck a poll on the top; pick your preferred weight and second.

Iirc imr4831 and imr4831sc had the same burn rate and cold be used interchangeably. The SC version was made to help the powder meter better.

I found that Winchester 760 had more perceived recoil in my 243 and 7mm08. My rifles gave the best results with a max charge. I used several powders for 243, but stayed with imr 4350.

I’d want something heavier than 80 grains for deer. 100 grain Core-Lokts were my go to factory loads before I got into reloading, and I’ve stuck with 95 or 100 grain pills since. Shoot whatever is more accurate in your rifle.

The two powders come from different lots. If your load is on the hot side, back off several grains and determine the amount of powder needed.

I go with Hodgdon’s data, they don’t list a separate entry for Short Cut powders, but as always, start low and work up. I use their H4831 data. I’ve been using H4831SC almost exclusively for the Hornady 103 ELD-X. It’s been proving a very nice round, but I’ve not had a deer in my sights yet. Good luck!
