HELP, stuck bore brush.

Take out the nipple, trickle in some Ffffg black powder, replace the nipple, cap it and blow that brush right out. Worked fine for my .54 Renegade. You can trust me, I'm not like the others. Mike

Just want you nay-sayers to know, I have shot stuck brushes out. It takes more powder that a stuck jag in the barrel, but it will get enough pressure to blow the brush out.

Even a length of soft copper tubing will do.
Helps to deburr and sharpen the ID.
I will admit I never spent much time trying to shoot a brush out.
A couple tries and I gave that up.

I got to thinking, if the powder wont blow the brush out because the brush is too porous, wouldn't repeated loading and fireing eventualy burn it out by melting it to the point that it becomes unstuck?

I dont use wads. The bullets that I have shot and recovered had light pitting on the bottom powder side. didn't say first time a charm , might take a couple of dozen or more.

Update: Tried shooting it out with small amouts of powder, no luck. Took it to a local gunsmith, and have it back. (He is going out of town). Tried the tube idea, didn't work. I am now noticing that the barrel has a short powder or patent chamber. (It's a Green Mountain barrel). Didn't think it did. Tube is hitting the shoulder. Tried to shoot it out with more powder. The caps are blowing the rag 0ut the barrel, but the powder is not igniting. I started with about 45 grains and I'm up to around 100 grains in there. (acumulated). The other night the 20 grains I was putting in did ignite. Does anybody know if Green Mountain barrels have a breach plug that can be screwed of ? Tried a .22 cal. brush, but didn't get it past the shoulder of the powder chamber. Gonna try again. Almost tried removing the breach plug myself. Don't really think I should. Can't turn out very good. But it may end up my only chance. Gonna hold of on that though for a bit. Not even sure if it is removable.

Yes, the breech plug is removable.
Removal is not impossible for a layperson with the right tools.
Some are easier to remove than others.

Removing the breech plug from one of those is a major operation for a skilled gunmaker.
Not something someone without all the needed tooling that should even be contemplate.

I've shot out a stuck jag and a ball w/out powder by trickling some powder in the breach.I don't think it'd be a problem with only about 15 grains or so(or a full charge for that matter).Maybe a wadded up piece of flannel soaked in spit, shoved down on top right down to the powder(you got to create some pressure). If you ever get scared doing stuff like this(as a kid I double loaded once)you can tie it down to an old tire and run a trigger string back behind a tree!

Now that you have stated it is a Green Mountain barrel, why not just call them and ask about removing the breach plug. They should be able to tell you or they may want you to send the barrel in for service.

When is the gunsmith comming back from out of town?

Do you have another smith in the area?

A gunsmith from a near town (Balaton,MN.) meet me in Marshall yesterday. (Redline Custom). He will have the gun for a week or two.

MMMM if it was mine i could have had it out in less than 30 minutes. Say less than 30 minutes as thats about how long it would take to go through my fishing gear to get the 200LBS Steel wire leader and a hook. pushing it down the barrel with a treble hook and pulling it out less 3 minutes. Then putting it all back and throwing the brush in the trash. Yep about 30 minutes.

the one in the center.

About 15 years ago. My brother in laws and I used to go shark fishing. Pretty serious stuff. We went on boats and even caught a bunch from local piers. Off piers we would use a Number 5 weight with 40lbs test line then cast it out as far as we could. Then we would take a pretty large fishing hook put some bloody mackeral on it. The hook was attached to the 200lbs steel leader. then we would clip the leader to the fishing line and let it sink into the ocean. That steel leader is tuff. I have hauled up plenty of sharks on them. I imagine putting a fishing hook and running it down the barrel as mentioned would pull it out no problem.

lol ya i can see your point there. shoot he would just have to pm me. i would mail him one. probably cost less than a dollar and i have plenty of those steel leaders. If these steel leaders can pull up a 9 foot Thrasher it can pull out a wire brush.

There is no way you would ever get a fish hook dangling on a leader to catch on the twisted wire Which has the brass threaded part broke off. If it did by some miracle catch in between the twisted wires it would just pull out the end as you tried to lift the brush out.

Again! A tube that fits over the wire will take it right out. You can get ridged copper tube most anywhere. Or any tube you have or can find.
Cutting the end at an angle might make it easier to start it over the wire. If you were going to call green mountian, ask them what dia. the powder chamber is then you will know what tube OD will fit.

I drew what it might look like at the bottom of the barrel with a hook and the tube. His has no brass on the wire.
