maybe an answer

I pick up my Beretta Hornet .32 on 3/13. IF, that is, it isn't one of the older models with the lower slide guide. I'm checking tomorrow to double check. If its the newer version, then its a 'go' but if its the older model, I'm killing the order/wait period, and cashing it in for a S&W .38 with a 4" bbl. She enjoys the J-frame, as long as its .38 special, but she would like the .38 k-frame 4" even more. And, there was a time when a .38 was the cats meow. If you doubt it, go stand behind a target where some old 'one-eye' is cutting paper with his "ol' trusty .38!"

JHP with a good grip will work just fine for SD. Remember, its placement. Guy at my local gun shop goes bear hunting with a .22. Says 'its all about shot placement! Go practice!'

I recommend a .22lr or magnum. I read a report years ago that they are more effective than the .25 and .32. I am not a fan of DA pistols. If you really are concerned about the first shot carry cocked and locked. I wouldn't go hotter than .38 special or 9mm. A .45? For someone with RA? DA?
Think about it. Some of you have never been in pain.
