Help with Stevens 16 gauge single shot

Last fall, I picked up a rusty, crusty Stevens 16 gauge single shot for $20 that was going to be a winter project. I never got around to it and was contemplating selling it as is, but my father-in-law expressed interest in it. I'd like to just give it to him (they do a lot for us), but I'm looking for some information first.

Is there a model number for this gun? Any thoughts on manufacture date?

The major issue is that it is missing the firing pin (see first picture). Midway, Numrich, etc. list firing pins for Stevens single shots, but it looks like there are multiple models and I want to make sure I get the right one.

And would this thread apply as far as firing pin assembly replacement: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=556966&highlight=stevens+single ?

The action is tight and the rust is mostly on the surface with no deep pitting. The bore appears clean and smooth (with the exception of the spider nest halfway down the barrel). Thoughts on shootability? What size shells it takes?

The left side of the frame says:
STEVENS
THE FULLY
GUARANTEED
SINGLE GUN

The right side of the frame says:
J. STEVENS ARMS COMPANY
CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.
MADE IN U.S.A

It says "16 GAUGE" on the left side of the barrel

There is no serial number that I can find.

As I said, I'd love to give it to my FIL, but not if it's only good as a combination boat paddle / anchor.

I have the exact same as an orphan from an auction. If I can remember when I'm down to the shop tomorrow, I'll take a photo and dimension my pin as mine's apart for a sort of wall hanger-lean against the fireplace sorta tune up. I also wanted to practice color case hardening the receiver.

bigdaa, thank you for the links, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it is not a 94. Based on the exploded diagrams you linked to, the 94 appears to have the firing pin assembly held in by a screw through the top. I've attached a couple of different pictures that show a third pin on the side of the receiver that I believe holds the firing pin assembly in place.

Note the pin on the receiver.
The receiver identification stampings are not the same and are vague, but the write up is very interesting if not a bit confusing.

I think we are getting close.

The serial # may be on the water table.I have a Fox Sterlingworth and that's where the Ser.# is located.

Alright, I give up. I've tried opening that PDF on three separate computers and no-go. Maybe I need to downgrade to an older version of Reader?

Regardless, based on the (confusing as heck) Calguns post linked above, I think it's a 105. Searches for 105 images are very similar, except some have what appear to be screws through the receiver instead of pins.

So that being said... any thoughts on a firing pin assembly for a 105?

And if you think this was fun, wait 'til you see the 20 gauge Sears pump humpback that I will be looking for some information on!

That looks a lot like the model 1896 stevens I used to own. you may want to try that model and see see what it gets you. Best of luck to you.

Your shotgun is either a model 85 or 89, those two were pretty much the same ie; barrels................
