I love snub-nosed revolvers, and was wondering if Smith made an early version of the 686 in the short barrel? A pre lock model would be perfect. Where do you think I should start looking? There is nothing around here in the local gun stores. Thanks.
gunbroker.com is your friend! They might have one. Also, go to the S&W forums http://smith-wessonforum.com/forum.php and post a WTB (want to buy) add for one. There are many people there who might have on for sale.
They made the 686 CS-1 for the Customs Service in 1988 with a three inch barrel.
There was a 2.5 inch barrel 1984 limited edition Model 686 Compact for Lew Horton.
From 1990 to 2001 the 2.5 inch barrel became a catalogued option. The lock was introduced in 2001, so the majority of 2.5 inch guns will be pre-lock.
There were also a couple of ported specials from tbe Performance Center, the 686 Mag Comp with single port three inch barrel, 300 made in 1992; the 686 Carry Comp seven shot with single port three inch barrel and the 686 Quad Port seven shot with 2.5 inch barrel.
I purchased one of the Lew Horton guns with the 2.5" barrel (no porting). I let my best friend talk me out of that one along with a 4" barrel one. The 2.5" was a very nice gun, but did have an annoying muzzle blast.
