High quality 9mm?

Grip looks really uncomfortable to me. These still made? I'd like to hold one of them just to see what they feel like.

They stopped making them a few years ago. The P7M8 is very comfortable. I have a P7M13 and the grip is a little to wide at the back. Either way it a pretty awesome pistol.

For a 9 mm any of the Ruger P series pistols and they are inexpensive not cheap, there is a difference. Second choice, for me at least a tie between the Sig series and CZ75 pistols.
Third choice Beretta 92fs.

These two would be my advice although slightly over your budget:
Sig P226 enhanced elite, or
CZ 75 Tactical Sports.

The budget is flexible if need be. The CZ75 Shadow T SAO was one of the two original options that sparked this thought. There is also a P226 EE used in one of the semi-local shops for sale at $800ish that I plan to check out on Thursday. The shop with the P226EE also has a few BHP's on the rack that I'll look through. I don't think they stock much of the CZ line but they have one or two used in last I saw. Another shop has a 92FS Inox used priced at $550 that I plan to check out as well.

The HK, while certainly a high quality firearm, is one I've never had a draw to and don't think I'd spend the money they often pull simply to own one. There are a couple used S&W 39 and 59 models at the store with the 92FS so I'll look at them a bit more as well.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. They all are appreciated and all are nice to hear. Plenty of very nice firearms listed that all would fit what I'm looking for very very well.

My favorite utility/carry nine is the S&W 5904, so much so that I own three. Alloy frame, 3rd gen, simple, durable, and reliable.

I like my early-90s Italian mfg Beretta 92FS a lot, and would never likely sell it. It's a classic and a lot of firepower, if a tad large.

My most elegant and accurate "pride-of-ownership" range-use-only nine however, is my Mid-80s Belgian mfg BHP.

Went to a.couple stores today. The used p226 ee was real nice. Almost bought it until i saw a stainless.cz75b marked used that looked unfired. Price was well under $500 after tax so i jumped on it. I need to find a good smith to send it to for an action job and maybe new sights. Other than that the pistol felt great and looks sharp. I'll fet pics up when im off work. I figure if it isnt what i want i can trade it in on something else though i dont see that desire popping up soon.

For a high quality 9mm at low cost look at the Witness Elite Match. As a single action improved clone of the CZ75 it combines the best of the SIG P210 and Browning Hi-Power. Built in Tanfoglio's custom shop it can't be beat for the price. And no need to send it off for a trigger job, the trigger is awesome out of the box.

I'm partial to CZ75's because they usually shoot so well. I like the Browning High too, except for the previosuly mentioned trigger is usually not the greatest. But, the BHP trigger feels pretty good compared to what passes for a decent trigger on a lot of popular autos these days.

Get the new walther, I held one and it rocks, the reviews are stellar from everyone who I have spoken to. I just didn't need another 9mm, in that size. I picked up a LC9, with laselite. But if you are just ging to admire it, like a few guys said, maybe a nickel plated Browning Hi power, Throw some burled wood frips on it. Sure to please. Or a kimber in 9, they have some nice guns. And there is also the EMP, of which I have one in 40, you can add some aliens and put a wilson hammer on it to match the finish and you will have a beauty. It will cost you 1200, as will the Kimbers but I love my EMP.

What you have to pay $3000 for a P210 in the USA? A former swiss service pistole P49 aka P210 worth only approx $1000-1100.
U.S. prices run upward of $2000.
If you whant the "holy grail" of 9mm handgun buy a Sphinx:

Sphinx attended the last two SHOT Shows, but never got around to importing their guns. I think Edgar Budischowsky's Korriphila 701 is a much better choice in double action autopistols.

Tops in my book would be:

  1. Sig 210
  2. Tie: An STI 1911 in 9x19, or Sig X5 in 9x19

As a good value: BHP (Mag break removed and trigger job), CZ 75

I was bitten by the BHP bug, and fell into a good deal on a used model with the tangent sights. The sights were not my favorite, but the price and condition of the pistol roped me in. After getting it home, and removing the mag safety, it is very well one of my favorite guns to shoot. Honestly I find myself more drawn to it than my 1911. Past being just a range toy, I have found the hi-power (even with the tangent sight) to be a very comfortable carry gun as well.

It depends on day of the week. Today it was DAO S&W 5946. Very elegant all stainless handgun with very smooth DA trigger pull. It's hard to beat the under-rated and undervalued second-hand Gen. 3 S&W.

For target shooting they are meybe not better 9mm gun ever build.
But as "range toy" I would choose:
1. Walther PPQ
2. S&W M&P
3. IMI Jericho (in the USA maybe sold as IMI Baby Eagle)

The price for long in the tooth one start at about $1500 and can go past $3000 with spare mag going for about $150. I have seen improved German version that had tag of $2200.
I do like your iron jacketed 9x19 ammo. It's inexpensive and so clean burning it cut on gun cleaning a whole lot. Another bonus is Americans fear it because slug attracts magnet so they buy Federal 'Champion' or white box Winchester instead which makes me very happy.
