Can someone please splain to me how the USP's interchangable trigger variants work? The HK website does an adequate job describing the type of trigger operation that each variant provides, in an abstract sort of sense. But it doesn't say a derned thing about how to get the specific variant I want into the specific gun I (want to) own. So...

How hard is it to switch from one variant to another?
Do the different variants require different parts? If so:
- How much do the parts cost?
- How hard are the parts to install (do it myself? give it to a 'smith? send it back to HK?)
- Where do I get parts from?
Which variant comes standard?
Can I request a specific variant when I buy/order the gun?

Can any of y'all help me out?

The hkpro.com can answer alot of your questions for sure. As far as I can tell, the variant 1 is standard--at least 90% of the one's I see for sale are V1. The only other variant I've seen advertised is the V2 for lefties. I would imagine that you could order whichever variant you want but it would have to be changed out. I myself have been looking for a V3(closest to my P226) but haven't found 1 for sale that way. Good luck.

What I want is a safety only (no decocker function) that is ambidextrous. I've never seen that listed, but then, the only list I've seen goes from V1-V10, and I seem to recall a V11 or V12 mentioned at some point.

See here for the variants:

Note that none of them are ambi.

jason: What you want is the plate for variant 9, and an ambi lever.

Headless: You can order them from the factory with a specific variant. Most that are sold to shops are V1. Changing variants is not difficult, I've done it myself. The cost to change is variable (heh), depending on whether you neeed a new plate, new lever, or both. If you need both, then you'll prolly spend about $50-75 depending on where you get the parts.

Go to HKPRO for info about getting the parts. You can buy used ones there sometimes, or new ones from dealers listed. I got my last ambi lever from Nigel Brayley (Brayley Ballistics in Austr.). I don't know if he's still selling parts to the US.
