Ho Ho Ho, I've got a machine gun!

I'm a sucker for super fast firing 9mm submachine guns, so an HK MP5, MAC-10 or one of the smaller UZIs would be at the top of my list. An M16 lower would definately be sweet though.

Give me an MG-42 and a bunch of spare barrels.

EDIT And a whole bunch of links. And about 100K rounds of ammo.

Practicality factor: HK MP5/10
The only reason I would really want an automatic weapon would be a sub-machinegun for engaging multiple close range targets in a home defense situation, at longer ranges I'd probably stick to semi-auto with a larger caliber .308.

Historical factor: German MG42
This gun was the equivalent of the Henry lever action rifle in the Civil War. It was the first true assault rifle, and the standard military arms of the next century followed its basic format: full-automatic capability, detachable high capacity magazine, high powered rifle ammunition. Though ammunition would be a PITA to procure, I would not shoot the gun that often. Though should a bad guy come knocking, I think I'd jump at the chance to let it fight for the good guys for once in its life.

For style, it'd have to be a suppressed mp5 with a nice red dot sight.

For sheer blow'em up goodness, it's the Mk19. I don't have anything I could attach a Gau cannon to, so I'd have to pass on that.

I would like a tungsten penetrator from an old apfsds round though - something about a big tungsten dart appeals to me.

Thompson, cause I had one in Korea, then a 20mm gatling gun taken from an F-102 and mounted in the back of my Jeep. I hate tailgaters!

I'd take something I afford to feed, probably a subMG in 9x19 or .45. Lots of choices, hard to pick just one.

The 30mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon mounted on the A-10;).

As for something I could actually carry around: either a Thompson, or a MG36 just to piss off H&K.

P90, Steyr Aug, and a beretta 93R.They just look so badass. If I had to go with one though,I'd probably go p90.In my opinion it's the most effective submachine gun ever.Superior armor piercing abilities,Bullets that tumble to enlarge wounds(for lack of the correct term),ammo capacity that dwarfs assault rifles.Shoots as far as a subgun is ever gonna shoot.I Also like the Steyr tmp.

If You're Talking Pure Fantasy

If you're going to go THAT far. I want a SHAKK (Seeking Hypersonic Ammunition Kinetic Kill) from John Barnes Timeline Wars Trilogy. See the link - the SHAKK is on the left. (heh, heh) Any gunnie should read at least the first book of the Trilogy.

A SHAKK is

(1) Nuclear powered

(2) Makes it's own ammunition

(3) Holds 2,000 rounds

(4) Fires, semi, burst - 6 rounds in a hex pattern and is as powerful as a grenade, and full auto

(5) Has a maximum range of 6 miles

(6) Ammunition is brilliant, destroys the gun your target is holding at first, then attacks the person holding it. Zeros in on the target's brain and destroys that.

(7) Self-destructs if it doesn't find a target.

(8) Has an optical sight you can use OFF the gun.

There's just something about the ole' Tommygun, I like the Thompson M1A1 model mostly.

I would definitely have to ask for the Browning M-2 HB. Of all the machine guns it's got to be my favorite in size and power. Not much of a portable weapon but there's no hiding from it!
