I have been on a testing quest for a 45 auto bullet that wont blow apart. I came across these 0.452 Hornady XTP MAG bullets in 240 grain. I understand that the 240 is heavier than standard loads for 45 auto, but I do see some published data for 240's. I understand this load will require careful development because of loss of case space equaling increased pressure. My HK45C is rated for +P pressures. I do have a chronograph to monitor what is going on.

My question is has anyone loaded this 240 XTP MAG in 45 AUTO?

The purpose for my load is a woods defense load that can bust through bone and penetrate. I want affordable bullets though (this is why I'm looking at these)

I know the 45 Auto is not the ideal choice for the woods but I want it to be the best it can be with a bullet that doesn't shed its jacket so easily and/or blow apart. Since these MAG bullets are rated for fast 45 colt, 454, and 460 velocities...they should open up just a bit at 45 auto velocities and keep on driving through whatever they hit.

Thanks

I can’t comment on the pistol performance, but I have shot quite a few deer with these in 50 cal muzzleloader sabots.

I have a few perfect mushroomed bullets found when processing deer I shot. Basically, about a 3/4” diameter flat slug with the copper petals in tact.

They seem to hold up well in my opinion.

Thanks guys. I have to shoot jacketed through my polygonal rifling so pure lead is not an option.
Thanks for replies

I think there will be case capacity issues too.

The 240 MAG bullet is a tough bullet designed for the .454 Casull’s velocity window. It will expand at high end .45 LC velocities, but out of a .45 Auto any meaningful expansion is zero; I tried them out of one of my .45LC revolvers at 1000 fps and there was no increase in bullet diameter. Anyway, I’m not sure of the advantage of using a bullet just 10 grains heavier than the standard 230 bullet and which is not designed to feed reliably through an auto. To me, reliability trumps any tiny increase in sectional density.

.

That being said, it sounds like a waste of time. I don't want to spend money on bullets that may not feed. Thanks for info.

Funny, after dozens of years on internet gun forums, I don't think I've ever seen two posts about using .454/.460 hunting bullets in a .45ACP at the same time......https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/hornady-45-cal-240gr-xtp-mag-452.855583/

That said, if you're looking for a bullet that will not blow up, give deep penetration and not cost an arm and a leg, why not just use the old standard 240ball projectile(FMJ). The 240 gr XTP-Mag was designed to give minimal expansion at 2000fps. Shooting it outta a .45acp, it will perform the same as ball/FMJ.

You can shoot coated lead (HiTech or Powder Coated) without issue. If you want a tough, heavy bullet, a coated lead truncated cone design would be my first stop.

xtp bullets will not blow apart shot out of any pistol. they are designed to expand within a certain range of velocities. get the 230 grain xtp designed for the 45acp cartridge, load them up using a hornady manual and go shooting.

my self defense load in my glock 30 is a 230 grain hornady xtp @ 1000 fps (45 super velocity, you should get around 800 fps). I have shot a lot of 200 and 230 grain xtps out of my glock and have always had excellent results. i'll get a pic up soon.

luck,

murf

Guess I should of looked around before I posted, I would have never guessed someone else was doing this too
