I told my wife I wanted a new folder for Christmas, I have one I bought at a flea market and it's a hunk of junk, the pin to open it with one hand fell out before the week was over. We were in a sporting goods shop and I saw a set of two Winchester knives, a folder with a 3" or so blade (same size as my current one) and a smaller one with two blades. I'm pretty sure she bought them for me after she saw me looking at them.

Are these decent knives? I'm not after anything fancy, just a basic tool that'll stand up until I manage to lose it (which is why I don't buy expensive knives).

The latest ones are made in China. If you see one that is priced in the $15 to $30 range, run, these are junk. Easy to tell, it should be on the tang stamp.

Look for one of the ones that were made for Winchester by Blue Grass Cutlery. These are made in USA, and they were the Winchester licensees for the past 10 years, maybe a little longer. VERY good quality stuff, but a bit pricey.

They are Chinese made. Get a CRKT (Columbia River Knife & Tool), they are much better made for not a whole lot more.

The Winchester fixed blade Chinese knife makes a good utility blade. It also works as a defensive weapon.... a 16 year old female I know was raped by a "friend" (she was out cold on pain meds from a dislocated shoulder).

She grabbed her $10 Winchester fixed blade and rammed it into his thigh and his back, and he ran off. He ended up removing himself from this earth with a 9mm instead of shooting it out with the cops (who had him cornered in a apartment).

Cheap? Yes. Effective? It can be.

Well, if these appear under the tree or in the stocking, I'll carry/use them. They CAN'T be any worse than what's in my pocket now, the rubber grips are coming unglued and the thing gets dull in my pocket. I figured from the price ($20 for the set on sale) they weren't much. Like I said I'll probably end up losing them anyway.

Thanks for the info!

the multi purpose winchester, the tools get caught together i just received one and 5 minutes after opening it i cut myself trying to close it :fire: :banghead:

I think I have the one you're talking about. I really like it. It is very sharp and seems fairly durable, even after about 6 months. I'm kinda hard on knives though, so I didn't want to drop $150 on a Benchmade and cry when I break it or lose it. If I lose this one, I'm only out $15.

OK, I got my knives for Christmas, both have wood handles (or wood inlays in the steel I guess), one is a single-blade locking folder with a belt clip, the other has three different sized blades with no locks.

Both seem to be real nice (certainly better than the POS I was carrying which over the last couple weeks developed the annoying habit of opennig in my pocket, reach in for keys and OUCH). Neither was especially sharp out of the package, a fact I remedied quickly. (Of course the kicthen knives needed some attention too, so...).

I may remove the belt clip, I don't use them (I work in NYC and wouldn't want to scare the sheeple, yes it's NYC legal but I don't need to go explaining myself). After I've carried them for a while I'll report back, but so far I like them a lot.

You could have bought a better knive from China, with less money if it didn't have the Winchester name on it. The only way I buy a chinese knive, is when it 's free! How? Menards had one for $3.99 with a $4.00 rebate. I think all chinese knives are worth what I paid. $15 for a chinese knive, when they are $3 or $4 at gunshow?....
