I am using a duty holster (right hand) and I am in the passenger seat?
Let me explain. My job (armed guard) sometimes requires to ride along in
an unmarked vehicle with a person I am supposed to watch out for who is carrying $$$.
While looking out the window for bad guys I sometimes observe drug deals in progress or assorted thugs looking for a fight.
These guys get upset with me "looking at them"
I feel at a distinct disadvantage because I have to wear a seat belt
and am crammed into a small seat. How would you draw your gun and engage if you had to?
(I use an elite level 3 bianchi duty holster)
Do I lean to the left as I draw and hope for the best?

I did precisely the same thing (although I was usually the one driving) for several years. I had the luxury of dressing in plainclothes, so I carried in a vertical shoulder holster. Since you are in uniform you're pretty much stuck with your duty rig. I might suggest carrying a second pistol in a more accessible place if your company allows it. Crossdraw or ankle holsters would be easier to reach when riding shotgun. Or, get a shotgun. ;)

Thinking of the duty holster limitations .... maybe a ''cheat'' is in order! If these situations are low speed cruising then I'd suggest just put belt over right shoulder .... but not across or buckled.

It'll look (at a glance) as tho you are belted but .. leaves more freedom.. even to extent that you could ''ride the gun'' with hand on it all time .... sorta ''hand on hip'' position.

Another thing ... work on training perypheral vision ... so that you actually see these guys without seeming to eyeball them ... practice it - you may be surprised just how much data you can gather. Might decrease the ''upset'' factor!

Have the other guy do the driving, and keep your weapon in your hand.

I second having the weapon in hand before you need it. The easiest method to draw while belted in is to not only lean left, but roll left a bit to rotate your right hip slightly in the air. Whatever method you choose, PRACTICE IT!! Have your partner park the truck in a safe area, unload your pistol, make sure it is unloaded, then practice getting your gun unholstered and getting free from your seatbelt. You don't want to do this stuff for the first time while you are ducking bullets.

Folks, that goes for passenger vehicles and ccw too. Practice getting your gun out of the holster and getting free from your car. It's not as simple as it seems.

BTW, Tactical Response offers a great vehicle tactics class that covers these techniques and many more.

Thanks you guys!

I will have to practice in the garage, I am not allowed to drive the car (policy) also not allowed to take the gun out of the holster unless it's an emergency (gunfight)

Could you get a crossdraw holster that would be more comfortable while seated, and easier to draw in a car?

Woohoo! Post 223! :p

A second small revolver in the off side pocket [ away from the door ].

That should buy you enough time to get to the duty gun in an emergency.

If co. policy prevents carrying a second piece [ non-issued by them ], carry it anyway. The only way the higher ups will know is if it has saved your bacon in an after action report.

IWB, duty holsters are not conducive to quickly acquiring the piece while seated, and to have to move, twist and turn, lean, etc will not be something you'll want to be doing while taking incoming or otherwise distracted by the action at hand.

Have the means to respond in kind immediately. That means a gun in the hand or hand on it while it's in the jacket pocket.

On top of everything else, if threat is to right rear and you're right-handed, you're in deep doodoo, given seat belt, duty holster and regs. Learn to shoot left-handed, carry a .38 snubbie inside your shirt. Or move to the real world!

Stay safe.

One quick note: if your (non-authorized) backup is of the same caliber as your duty weapon, just make absolutely sure that they both carry the same loads. If you fire a couple with your back-up, make sure you also fire with your duty gun, and transfer the empties as required.

They don't have to know you have a (unauthorized) backup... do they? The less questions asked, the better.

Bad idea...

The police will become involved, and despite popular claims to the contrary are usually quite competent.

I know this advice is well-meant, but if you shoot, there WILL be a police investigation. And this is called "tampering with evidence.

What's the worst that could happen from carrying a BUG if you use it in legitimate self defense? It might be against company policy, but so what?
I agree with Vern, its bad mojo to go tampering with evidence, this might make the police mighty suspicious of you.
Practice drawing seated, until you can do it in your sleep.
And consider carrying a BUG for emergency deployment.
Is the driver any good? He should be able to drive you out of any situation in a hurry, never even giving you time to return fire.

i just say practice the draw in your garage in the same position you would be in on the job.

One other solution is to not wear your seatbelt, but i think you have more of a chance getting into an accident than a gunfight.

:(

I wish, I subcontract for the city and the drivers are awfull, tend to panic at th first bicycle messenger they see, blind to school buses and old ladies in crosswalks, plus they're communist holophobes to boot,oh yeah, this being SanFrancisco and they work for the city, they don't speak or understand english:uhoh:

Devonai has the best suggestion. Say put a full sized service pistol in the car pocket (glove box.) Same type of pistol you carry on you.
