I have a Ruger 480. I had no problems with the first few boxes of hornady ammo. After a bit they changed the boxes and now the cases stick pretty tight in the cylinder. I called Hornady and they said they didn't make any changes to the round just the packaging so it is possible that it is just coincidence.

Does anyone suggest that I use a special solvent or cleaner or should I spend some time and polish the chambers? What would you suggested for polishing the chamber?

Lastly, what causes this?

Thanks

I don't have the solution, but I know what causes it. The brass expands slightly when fired, sometimes making extraction difficult.

I have never encountered the problem myself, but I have heard of it before. Perhaps the ammunition is a little out of spec. Is it all of the chambers or just a few. If it is just a few, it maybe that your chambers were reamed out a little larger than they should be.

I don't know the cause of the problem for certain, but sticky extraction is supposedly a characteristic of the SRH in 454 and 480 due to the kind of steel used to make them. The 454 and 480 are made of a different steel than the 44mag version, and one of the characteristics of the steel is that it stretches and flexes a bit more than common. Normally the case expands against the chamber wall and there is little or no expansion of the chamber, then the brass will springback just a tiny amount which will make extraction easy. Now according to what I've heard and read, with the SRH 454 and 480, the case expands against the chamber wall, but the chamber expands just a bit more than common too, and of course the case expands with it, but the steel has more springback than the brass. So, you end up with a case that is still firmly against the chamber walls.

I don't know if that's truly the problem or not, but I do know my SRH in 454 does the same thing if I get anywhere near maximum loads, though it's fine with light 454 loads and 45 Colts. Of course the problem isn't helped by the fact that the factory chambers are anything but smooth.

Try cleaning the cylinder get a nylon brush fairly still coat with hoppes #9 or your fav cleaner have brush check in cordless drill b4 hand and scrub cylinder holes out..

Ive never had problems with cases sticking in my 454 but have heard others had maybe when it was back at ruger they polished the inside of cylinder but i dont know

I've had the same experience with my Ruger GP100 when I fire Blazer .357 ammo in it. I've never experienced this problem when I fire brass ammo in it.
