How do you practice shooting for SD?

USPSA matches are great for training. You get to run and gun.
Not to give you a hard time about this, but I've seen too many people do scary things in a fixed shooting lane to think they're ready for "run & gun" events.

While some are good at shooting paper down a lane, a lot of these guys have never been taught how to safely clear a holster.

Practice weapon retention, drawing "in the clinch", deploying weapon at contact distance.

I also think point shooting is a worthy endeavor.

EDIT

This is by no means the only area to focus, but in my line of work it is what is drilled into us. Convicts practice disarming officers and fighting in the clinch. Trust me it will happen and if you don't have a plan, you will die.
