I'm here to respond with my opinion and personal experiences.
I have never fired a round at a human being.
That said, I don't have a personal experience with 357sig vs. .40S&W in terminal ballistics in flesh.
I've carried a P229 in 357sig for the past 6 years or so. I really like it. In my experience, it's accurate- as accurate as my BHP or CZ PCR in my hands.
Yes, there is sometimes more muzzle flash than 9mm and .40. I've used Gold Dots, Golden Sabres, and S&B truncated cone in mine, along with WWB. To my recollection, the Remington ammo had a brighter, more pronounced flash.
I have fired my P229 alongside an otherwise identical P229 in .40 which was owned by a friend who posts here. To my perception, his .40 exhibited more torquing than mine did. Muzzle jump seemed about the same. IIRC, I was shooting 124 gr. S&B and his rounds were 155 gr. of unrecalled make. That may account for some torque.
What I think is most important is that I train with mine and I'm comfortable with it. If I wasn't, I'd carry my P220, which is a grapefruit compared to Red Delicious vs. Jonathan apples.
I like looking at tables, charts, and graphs. I like gelatin. I even enjoy reading autopsy reports. I don't tend to pay a lot of attention to that, though, when it comes to making a decision regarding my personal safety choices. I ask questions of people I respect and trust, then make up my own mind. Then I continually evaluate results and adjust from there. I've sold off something that underperformed to my expectations. I didn't bitch about it.
