How far do you shoot with open sights?

200 yards. I've never had the opportunity to shoot any longer distances, but I can't see very well at 200 so it probably doesn't matter anyway

Opens? 300 yards with a VZ-24 8mm, and it was an abysmal disaster. Couldn't hardly keep them on the paper. Of course, shooting Turk ball may or may not have contributed to the problem...

Aperture sights? Haven't found my limit on round bullseyes yet. 600 with the AR-15 isn't a great feat once I'm practiced and keeping my head in the game. 80gr Nosler reloads seem to shoot really well that far out. I doubt they'd stay supersonic to 1000 though; they're not loaded super hot.

Now on a game animal, make mine apertures and I'm confident to 100, which is about 4 times the range I need around here.

I have shot open out to 300-500 yards but am fair at best. Eyes are not like they were twenty years ago. Shoot often at 100 yards. The local Ikes chapter has a monthly 25,50,75 and 100 yard open sight free standing fun shoot. I find this to be a blast! And actually quite frustrating at times.

200 yard guns

This last weekend at the Texas Garand Championship I shot 30 round matches with a Garand, an M1 Carbine and a Swiss K31. Prone with a sling on all of them I could keep it in the nine and ten ring and standing with the Garand I shot a 95 out of 100. The K31 shot a 97X2 and a 99X3 prone at 200.

Lots of other rifles got shot. 1903s, 1903A3s, P17s, Enfields, Mosins, Mausers, Swedes. I saw one Krag. I don't think anyone wandered off the scoring rings at 200.

It was a military match. I'm comfortable with careful shots on deer out to 100 with open sights but depends on the light and conditions. Shot a doe with a Garand last year at 125. Neck shot from head on. She was looking at me. I was trying to shoot her in the head but the range was a little longer. I put the front post right under her chin.

I shot a buck I rattled up a few years back with a 1891 Argentine Mauser Cavalry Carbine in 7.65 one-handed with my left hand. I really didn't use the sights. I had to either shoot him or move over so he could get in the blind with me.

Blackfork: "I had to either shoot him or move over so he could get in the blind with me."

I had to take a "self defense" shot at five feet on a dink eight point in a high banked narrow creek with a Knight Mk-85 .50 cal muzzleloader. I swear the muzzle blast burnt the hair on his chest. My hunting buddies still give me grief....:D

My eyes aren't what they used to be, so I limit my open sights to 100 yards or so. Scopes for everything out beyond that.

300 yards with my Winchester 30-30 on the steel targets at the Usury Pass Range. I love that ding.

I can shoot at the moon which is 186,000 miles away but I can't hit much past 50 yards unless it is big.

Some military guys often shoot accurately with iron sights out to several hundred yards and I don't see how they do it. I expect they "use the force" or something like that.

MurrayB, You need a better rangefinder when shooting at the moon. It's closer to a quarter of a million miles away.

Or do you shoot at the speed of light, approx 186,000 mi/sec? Watch out for that recoil!

PS: The Sun is... drumroll please... 1 AU away.

Yeah, but the AU is arbitrary.

The AU was based on the suns distance from earth, so that's a kinda arbitrary measurement. Light takes about 8 minutes to get to the earth and the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. So, 186,000(mps) X 8(min) X 60(secs in one min) = 89,280,000 miles. I have to admit that off the top of my head that doesn't sound right, but I'm a machinist, not an astronomer.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

1911 guy is correct.... The distance from Earth to Luna is approx 250k miles. One AU (Austronomical Unit: Distance from Earth to Sol) is approx. 90 million miles.

Back to subject: The furthest I regularly shoot with my M1's is 600 yards. NRA Service Rifle across the Course and CMP-EIC events.

Scores are generally in the low 190's. My best @ 600 is a 196-5X (out of 200) with several 194's right behind. Mostly at Bucksnort Range, Marshall MO and St Louis Bench Rest Club, Wright City MO. I also shoot regularly at Mill Creek Range, DeSoto KS but they are limited to 500 yards.

Note: The 600 yard MR target 10 ring is 12 inches across (2.0 MOA) and the X ring is 6 inches across (1.0 MOA).

Best to all,
swampy

Garands forever

I plink at 200 yards with my magnum revolvers and .22 rifles. This is a situation where true open sights are an advantage: I can hold a certain portion of the front ramp above the rear sight blade to adjust for elevation. Once you figure out how much front ramp you need, then it's pretty easy to ring gongs at a couple hundred yards.

When I had an M1A1, I regularly shot at 400yds with good success at 1 gallon jugs of water. Now with iron sights i.e. a Lyman apeture, I shoot them a 270 yards with a 1957 model 94 Winchester my Dad gave me. I try to do this several times a month to stay tuned up.

OT: Gongs

Sorry to go off topic here, but can anyone send me a link to what these "gongs" look like and what they are made of? Also, do you hear the gong if you are wearing ear protection?
Sounds like it would be fun to hang one of these gongs about 300 yards away on the next mountainside and go at it.

Sizes vary, but in my case they're just pieces of scrap steel and old scuba tanks suspended from a metal frame with chains. I can hear even hits from .22 rimfires with hearing protection on.

range max is...

200yds. Thats the furthest I've ever used mine (marlin 1894c in .357)
I use a Skinner reciever sight (aperature) and a williams .375 firesite with the
marlin factory cut out hood. I get 100% of my hits on a 10" paper plate at 200yds. Good enough for hunting I guess. From the bench groups are more like 4-5". Shooting with irons or open sights is definetly, a skill every rifleman
should have.:D

OT: Matt man

Does the steel have to be thick enough so that the rounds do not penetrate or does it still "gong" when when the metal is pierced?
(Maybe I should just start a fresh thread on gongs)

Some folks are confused as to what can be done at 1000yrds scope or no scope...:uhoh:

quote;I heard that during the revolution they would shoot out too 2000 yards or something

which revolution are we talking about?, because if it was the American revolution unless it was a cannon or mortar I doubt it.I have read of sharp shooters during the war but generally the accuracy was bad therefore the tactics of volley fire lined up standing or kneeling.

You guys are making me want to expand and test my limits, which is good. What are the regulation sized targets for matches at extreme distance shooting?

200 yards is the longest I can shoot around here and it requires a long drive and then a hike through the woods so most of my shooting is 100 yards.
