Rugers aren't exactly known for good triggers; so I'm wondering, how good/bad are the triggers on the M77's?

Also, any aftermarket solutions if the trigger is not that great?

I think the high-end 77 Mk IIs have an adjustable trigger, but I won't swear to that. The standard trigger is rather primitive. It can be cleaned up, but it's a job for an experienced smith.

I bought a Mk II in .223. I installed a Timney trigger; it's a piece of cake to do if you have a bench grinder or a Dremel tool. The safety spur needs to be ground to fit, but it's easy to do and only a little care is needed. I tweaked the trigger pull to about two pounds.

I paid about $70 for the Timney. I think they're available from Midway, but I haven't checked the price...

Tang Safetied M77s have a nice adjustable trigger stock

Mark IIs have a Liability proof trigger

I do own or have owned two original M77s and one Mk II.

The two originals were decent as I received them. The Mk II, I had a local guy do a trigger job on... came out nicer than any factory M70 or 700 trigger I can recall from the last 5 years or so... I think he charged me $35 to do the job.

I recently bought a m77 mk2 all weather 270 and the trigger feels great to me. I don't target shoot with it but it is my go to deer rifle. First day of gun season I shot a 8 point from around 150 yards and it never took a step, trigger works good for me.:D

I have a Ruger M77 VT (Varmint/Target) heavy barrel .308 and it comes with a two-stage trigger thats quite good. I've never measured the pull but its reasonably light and has a sharp, crisp let-off and no creep.

The Mark II has about as bad of a factory trigger as they come. My M77 came with an 8# trigger that is NOT adjustable. Better figure on spending $80 for a replacement timney or having it modified by a smith.

How's the overtravel?

I know a lot of the problem is with the barrel as far as accuracy, but I think creep, and overtravel pretty much are next in line as far as reasons for inaccuracy.

On my 10/22, replacing the horrid sights with williams firesights got me 50% tighter groups. Replacing the trigger got me another 50% reduction.

My friend puts 10 bullets through the same hole with it @ 25 yards.

So I go ahead and try to plan into the price of the gun, a trigger job if needed.

Heard great things about the new savage trigger...
