How many Utahns here on THR?

Ben, the classroom portion is going to be at an office about a mile from the Holiday gun club, then the shooting portion is going to be at Holiday.

I'm teaching it with another THR member, he is going to do the fingerprints and photographs. Our charge for the class, prints, and photos is $40. I normally charge $20 for just the class.

The time of day isn't 100% set is stone because I still need to work that out with my partner. He is trying to call in some favors and have a very special guest come and teach the law portion. If we were able to get this person you would be looking at one of the most knowledgable people in the state on the gun laws. So that would be very neat.

Are you trying to hook us up with some of Panchos Wisdom by chance?

I seriously would pay $20 just to come sit in for a refresher if you don't mind.

Ben, that would be perfectly fine. Not Pancho, but somebody who prosecutes people for breaking laws. :) I've shot with Mitch before, but I have not heard him teach a class. I love his book though.

Are you wanting to shoot as well, or just sit through the classroom portion?

Just sit through the class.

Mostly for a refresher, partly 'cause it would be nice to meet more THR members.

Groovy. Because I can have lots of people in the class, but the more people I have on the range the harder it becomes. So that is perfect. I'll add you to the class, and I'll send you more information once it is all confirmed.

I'm looking for...

good places near the Salt Lake Valley to shoot. By that, I don't mean ranges, but places that you can go where it's ok to shoot out in nature. directions, GPS coordinates, etc would be appreciated. I've heard that Salt Lake county is off limits to this type of activity, but i never can get a clear answer as to where I can go, or where any good places are. Thanks for the help!

SLCDave, your choices are limited if you are in SLC. You can go West on 80 and pick a spot out in the sticks. Or you can head to Utah county and pick a spot west of Utah lake (south of Saratoga Springs) or out towards the Pony Express trail. Either way you are looking at 45 minutes to an hour from SLC to find a place in the sticks to shoot. There may be spots north or even east of you, but I don't know of any.

Corriea, I've got about 4 friends that are wanting to get their permits, I'll pass along the info and I'll try to get the day off. I already have my permit, but would love a refresher, because the guy who taught my class, I'm pretty sure he had NO idea what he was talking about. To give a example, half way through the class he stops teaching to inform us that in the this state if an officer stops a car for any reason and the passenger has an open container of alcohol, the driver can not be given a ticket for open container in the vehicle. At that point, I lost respect... Still got my permit, but I'd love to sit in a class with someone who knows what they're talking about.

Crude, that would be great. Just be sure to give me as early a heads up as possible though so I know what I'm dealing with. For you experienced hands, the first hour and a half of the class is pretty slow. That portion is the state mandated basic pistol part. i.e. "This is a revolver, this is the barrel, this is the cylinder" etc. The next part covers the law and the use of force, and that part is the fun part.

Correia, could a friend and I possibly just come for the class too?

You already know my situation, but I'd love to actually sit through a class with subject matter that I care about! Not to mention the fact that I would like to meet as many THR members as possible...

I'll have to see if I can get the day off work, and if it jives with my buddy, but would that possibly be okay?

Wes

Wes, that would be fine. I can still fit two more, as well as the other fellow who PMed me. Not a problem. I'll get back to you with an address and a time of day on the 29th.

I lived there in the 1980's.... I know it does not count now.... W.Valley City

Live way out west in West Jordan. Transplant, call North Carolina home, but probably not leaving Ewetah anytime soon.
I am off wed/thursdays, hoping I can hit the June shootout, though.

Atc1man,
I also moved here from NC (Linville). However, I'm originally from SC.

Dr.Who, you lived in West Valley and lived to tell about it? Maybe it wasn't too bad in the 80's, but at present it's one of, if not the roughest area in Salt Lake Valley.

In fact when I was looking for a home to buy a few years ago the real estate agent wanted to show me a home in West Valley. I told her I would consider it only if I could mount a M2 gun on the porch.:D

I've been in and lived in some pretty bad neighborhoods in other states. Utah has nothing to fear. The only neighborhoods that make me nervous is some of the ones in Ogden.
Get lost in Houston (TX) near Hobby airport once or twice and you'll see what I mean. Live in Brownsville (TX) for a few years. Grow up in California.
Hell, my mom still lives in a real bad area in Santa Ana, near Fountain Valley....

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about Ogden. I helped my buddy move up there with his wife and 2yr old. Stopped at the closest gas station on the way back home(a 7-11) the cleck was in a bulletproof cubicle with a slot to slide money through. YIKES!!!! What an area to move into with a family.

WVC has its good parts and its bad parts. The part that used to be Hunter has lots of nice neighborhoods, the part that used to be Granger is the one with the neighborhoods that scare you. :) As for Ogden, I have a buddy who was a cop there, yep, some of those neighborhoods are as bad as they look.

But overall I've got to side with Atc1man, I lived in Birmingham Al once upon a time. We don't have anything that comes close to being considered a "bad" neighborhood by their standards. :p

I live in the Hunter area of West Valley, and it's a nice place to live. Growing up in Vegas, I haven't seen anyplace in Utah that would scare me too badly. I also served an LDS mission in Boston, and after that, I DEFINATELY haven't seen anyplace in Utah that scares me much.

We should roll through WVC and play gangster tag... you chase down the wannabe gangsters and slap them in the face and yell "Your it!" and then just slap them again for fun and say "Tag Back!" and then chase down the gangsters friends and slap them...
Sure, in LA or Richmond this would get you killed... but in Utah? Feh.
:D
