I have a 70 acre soybean field right across a gravel road from my hunting cabin. You could shoot a deer EVERY afternoon from the porch. It's illegal to fire across a county road and we would NEVER do that!

Did you get the bird? He was a little close for a scoped rifle.
No. He is actually a pet.

Wife was brush hogging one day and ran over a nest. 3 eggs did not get destroyed. Of those 3 only 1 hatched.

I currently have 3 1 wild 2 domestic, and before anyone starts on keeping wild animals, he will not leave. He has the run of the place and just hangs out. Currently sleeping on my roof.

We have a few chickens as well, but all of the large animals are long gone, I am too old and broken down to take care of them anymore.

Neighbors all know about the friendly turkey and will not shoot them. They eat from your hand, are more fun to watch, they are some very cool birds.

Here he is just minutes after coming out of the egg

About 10 minutes later

He can fly (sorta) at 5 days old, and ate on his own from the start. They really can take care of themselves from birth, only thing I had to watch for was things that wanted to make a meal out of him.

Now he is the size he can take care of himself....guessing about 30lbs.

I just take targets of opportunity here. A shot of a crow I hit at 98 yards with my 34.

Don't mess with the other birds or critters unless they are poisonous, or are messing with the house.

Squirrel-It's what's for dinner.

I wouldn't shoot the friendly turkeys, either.
They're funny to watch. Better than anything on TV.

Jaymo... I Like your byline. I work in a prison too. Or do you work in Congress?

Wow a pet turkey, that's awesome. I want one now.
They are very cool to watch, and you can tell they are very smart animals. They are however VERY MESSY.

We have groups of about 30 or so that wonder the back field....I figure it is only a matter of time before he hooks up with one of them......actually its a she.

Grayrock, I have put a lot of those little red beasties down at the cabin…. Lake of the Woods. They destroy just about anything and everything….. They even got in between the floors on our RV (use for overflow) and destroyed the water lines….. We had friends come by to stay and the water lines were totally ruined. … took the better part of a day to fix that one… and put me right back at war with those darn pests…….. all the best

I bagged this guy right after I took the photo with my old Benjamin .22 pistol.

Came in late from a match one Sunday night and went outside to cook a little dinner and noticed I had a mouse on a sticky trap. Figured I would deal with it in the morning. Came out the next morning and found a copperhead that just had its last meal.
