Hunting shows…like them or not?

My main complaint with hunting shows is when a 200 Inch Whitetail walks out, the deer gets shot with a .300 Remington Ultramag or whatever cartridge the sponsors are paying for that week, the deer runs off at the shot and runs literally to the horizon. The hunters start jumping up and down yelling about the good shot was, they start fist bumping and high fiving, and then they say "Lets go get that deer". The deer ran so far off that they are on camera visibly out of breath from searching for the deer.

If a deer runs more than about 50 yards after you shoot it, IT IS NOT A GOOD SHOT!

The only show I have watched where most of the deer drop at the shot or shortly there after is The Bucks Of Tecomate. Those guys can shoot, including Jeff Foxworthy.

Just my .02,

I've seen shows of 'em spot and stalking Whitetails in eastern Montana.

The feeder/food plot, tree stand shows are mostly archery, some black powder. I mean, for the most part in the eastern US, this is how it's done with stick and string, hunting out of a tree stand whether there's food for 'em or not. Just walking around the woods won't get ya much.

I like the Tracks Across Africa and all of the Ivan carter stuff, some of Jim Shockley and the other guy I kind of like is Tim Wells some of his stuff is pretty cool. The guy can flat out shoot a bow. I also like the Sports Afield show with Arron Neilson. I know Arron and he is a really nice guy who truly loves what he does. Beyond that I'm pretty much done with the hunting shows.

When there is little to watch they will do. They want to instill safety but when they click off that safety any buck in the Adirondack Mountains of northern NYS would turn himself inside out avoiding being shot!!

I always liked Tred Barta don't know if he is doing any more shows he was paralyzed from some sort of blood cancer.

I watched a Tred Barta show not to long ago. He was bear hunting from an all terrain wheelchair.

I heard television is terrible these days, but I really dont know because I have a 5 and 6 year old and I work at a hospital on heating and air so I really dont know! I did see a new episode of curious george the other day, but there was no hunting!

I've seen deer and other animals with bullet holes through both lungs and 2" exit holes run well over 100 yards. Or their heart blown to tiny pieces. A bullet through the lungs is about as sure as it gets, but any animal will live for 10-20 seconds afterward. Some lay down and die. Others can cover a lot of ground in 10-20 seconds.

I loathe them. The last one I remember watching was several years ago and they were hunting mule deer in Kansas. The "hunter" stalked within a couple hundred yards of a couple of bucks, rested his rifle over a fence post and proceeded to make one of the most blatant gut shots I've ever seen. I mean the poor buck clearly humped his back and slowly walked off while the "hunter" and his guide high-fived each other. That was it for me.
I think of hunting as a personal experience and don't care to watch other folks do it on TV.

I like some shows and there are some shows I don't like.

As much as I like hunting, I don't even watch a lot of the shows that are ok. IMO hunting is an activity enjoyed the most by participation, not watching it on tv.

Gamestalker nailed it.

"Pro" hunter Joe shoots something and then spends the next ten minutes talking about how he could never have made the shot without his X-brand moisture wicking camo undies.

That's usually about the time I turn it off.

meh...

I no longer hunt, but I will tune in on rare occasions. I like the outdoor scenery and footage of wildlife. What bothers me is that a 30 minute program seems to have about 25 minutes of commercials. I lose interest very quickly.

We were discussing this earlier today. I sort of like the show River Monsters because I think it's cool that he goes all over the world catching gigantic fish that I will probably never get to fish for. Of course there are 10 minutes of fishing, 30 minutes of commercials and 20 minutes of "scary" scenes about the folks in Zimbabwe that were attacked by some "monster".

They usually do, but I saw Foxworthy blow one's antler off once. Everyone laughed about it, including him. Hey, we all miss every now and then.

As for the question, it depends on what kind of mood I'm in as to whether or not I watch the hunting shows.
Most of them aren't hunting at all, they're simply going onto a ranch and picking out the deer they want to shoot. PLEASE NOTE, I am not saying they shouldn't be allowed to do that, just that I don't care to watch the show in that case.

The shows with Larry Weishuhn are the worst about this. There will be a 180+" deer standing broadside at 75 yds and he'll let it pass because it's only 3 1/2 years old.
Now, that works if you have a huge expanse of land, or a high fence but for the majority of hunters in America that is not how it is done. It's not even in the realm of possibility. Here, if you're not a landowner, you're a member of a lease covering a couple of thousand acres. You are surrounded on all sides by other leases covering a couple thousand acres. If you pass on a good buck, the guys on the other lease will not and you'll never see it again.

Again, I don't have a problem with these guys hunting this way. If I had a vast expanse of land I would manage the deer herd like that as well. It just doesn't necessarily interest me to watch.
