I think I'm being tempted.

That's a 10 years ago price even for the most basic model. You done just fine. Which variant is it?
I don't know what models there are. I just put a 4x32 Bushnell on it since it will be a close range cannon.
Recoil is like field loads in a single shot 12 gauge.

Well, you satisfied the itch. If you don’t care for it, apply the calamine lotion by passing it on.

One less itch to worry about.

I bought dies so it will be here forever.
I've only sold 2 guns in my life. I still kick myself about the first one. The other was a 308 that I couldn't love.

One way to get around that heavy recoil is to always shoot from a upright position. That way your body will give with the recoil. If you lean forward your body soaks up all the jump and recoil. I remember shooting those H&R single shot 12 gauge shotguns when I was young and they always jumped around. I went to the range on Friday to shoot my 338-06 and after about 15 rounds I forgot to hold the rifle tightly and it quickly reminded me to keep my mind on what I was doing. That 158 grain Speer is a good bullet.

It has a tendency to recoil up more than back. I will sit this primarily with a sling in field positions. I didn't even try shooting off sand bags.

The 2-7x32 Nikon came in and I switched stocks with my 223. This upped the weight a fair amount and brought felt recoil into 300 mag territory.

H&R Handi rifles are a pretty good value. I would love to find a few in thumper calibers just to shoot for the fun factor. 45-70, 35W, 444, something like these.
I know where a few thumpers are that I regret not buying. A 45-70 and 50 cal smokepole went to one friends house, a 35whelen to another friends house, a 500sw to a former coworker with an x frame to match, and a 4 pack of 444s bought at a huge discount as a store closed went to my great uncle and his sons. I’m pretty dumb at times.

I have Handi's in .243 and in .50 front stuffer. The 50 is pretty darn accurate but the telescoping ram rod was a complete let down. Now I just use a range rod.
I can't see how a telescopic ramrod would be a good idea.
I would make a walking stick with a ramrod holder in it. Not as handy as a conventional method, but it wouldn't break.
