I think it is time for another MD shoot

Dave,

Slugs only.

There are a few lanes out to 200 yards; most are 100 yards I think.

Hopefully the handgun range is completed by now (It should be).

OK guys, we are less than a week away. I hope we get a good crowd. I know many people will be away on vacation during the summer, but we usually get good crowds for these things and it has been a while since the last one. If you miss this one I doubt if we'll do another before Sept (I could be wrong- if enough people want a shoot sooner, we'll do a shoot sooner).

Has anyone been there recently (in the past week or two)? If so, is the pistol range up? If no one has been there recently, can anyone get there during the week to check it out? I'll try, but now that I'm working (in Annapolis) it is highly unlikely I'll be able to get there before they close for the day. Does anyone know what time they are closing now? My guess would be around 8pm so if traffic is light, and I don't eat dinner, I might be able to get there Tues or Wen.

If we don't find out I'll probably bring a pistol or two anyway. I'll bring a couple that I know I can hit with at 25 yards so I can use them on the rifle line if the pistol range isn't open, and I'll be ready if it is. They don't take that much room in a range bag so I encourage others to do the same (heck, even if it won't hit at 25 yds it won't hurt to bring one and one box of ammo just in case the pistol range is up and running).

I look forward to seeing everyone.

Chaim et al,

I'm going up Wednesday to give the Garand a shakedown cruise. I'll check on the handgun range and report back.

Well here's a partial list of what I plan on bringing:

K98K Mauser
Marlin Camp 45
M1 Garand

If I get them cleaned up in time I may bring the two Enfields I just got. We'll see though caused the were really soaked in cosmo. Girl will probably also bring her 1911 so we'll at least have one pistol with us. If you can think of anything you remember me having and want me to bring it let me know.

anapex,

Was it your M1 that always needed "a bump" to get the bolt to close? If I recall, there was little chance of Garand thumb on that gun......I'm curious as to what caused that.

I'm going to have to be very careful with mine......hard to play tuba with your fingers bandaged:p

Yeah yeah mines the one you gotta slap to close. I've heard explanations of a weak op rod spring or my garand just liking to do it. Guess I should buy a new spring someday and find out.

anapex,

Looks like it should be an easy enough fix to get that spring replaced. Maybe we can try and do it together sometime.

I'll post the Garand range report over in the rifle forum, but since I went out to Hap Baker today I thought I'd report back here on the handgun range.

Basically.....nothing to report. Still not open, though they have another trolley up. The RO was handing out the # of the person in charge of the project so that we could encourage him to get it moving.

Also....Bill, the range officer, has left for greener pastures. They are interviewing if anyone is interested:D

I don't have much in the way of interesting items to bring, but here's the list anyway:

Bushmaster AR15 20" HBAR
SKS
Marlin model 25 .22lr
Ruger P95 (9mm)
Ruger P97 (.45)
CZ40B (.40)

I suppose there's no need to bring the Bersa 380, since there ain't a chance in heck of me hitting anything at 75 feet with it:D

I nominate myself for the "John Kerry award" for being the most boring, as I'm bringing a Yugo SKS (just cleaned and refinished) and a Mosin 91/30.:D

I'm sorry for joining this discussion so late, but I've been extremely busy these past two weeks or more. I'd love to make it to the shoot today, and will do the best I can, but considering that I'm currently working and won't be off until six-thirty this morning I might be too tired after a twelve-and-a-half-hour, overnight shift. :(

Anyway, we'll see how it goes and if I should miss this one then you can count on my making the next.

OK, I'm probably not taking that much:
-at least one of the Win 94s (I'll have to check if I have more .45LC or more 30-30 and then I'll decide which one)
-Bushy AR
-maybe the SKS
-maybe my Marlin 60
-maybe the Remington 581
-maybe the Savage 110
-maybe the Ruger MkII
-probably the S&W 57 and a box of .41mag (only 20 rounds)
-maybe one of the .357s
-probably either the 1911 or CZ 75

I'll probably bring 2 or 3 of the probablies and one or two (and maybe 3) of the maybies. I've only got two definites on my list.

See you guys in a few hours.

Ok here's a list of definites for me:

K98
Garand
Marlin Camp 45
Springer 1911
P08 Luger

I may bring my M1 Carbine and another 1911, I just have to check to see if I have enough ammo for the carbine and enough patience to screw around with my troublesome 1911.

Ugh....too many margaritas last night.

This is going to be some UGLY shooting today.....:(

OK, here's my revamped list:
Definate:
-Bushy AR 15
-SKS
-Ruger MkII

Probably (leaning towards bringing along, though I may just concentrate on the 2 rifles and one pistol above):
-Winchester 94 in .45LC

Possible (leaning against, but I may decide at the last moment to bring them):
-Remington 581
-CZ 75B
-S&W 57

I've decided to mostly pare things down and may only take the 1st three for sure, and maybe one or two more, for two reasons. I haven't been shooting much (last time I took out any rifles was the last THR shoot I went to, I think I went pistol shooting once since then) so it may be better to concentrate on just a couple. I don't want to bring 50lbs of ammo in my backpack so fewer guns, and mostly .223/5.56 and .22lr ammo may be a good thing.

Well that was fun, and it's always a pleasure seeing everybody (even if my vision was a little blurry from last night's margaritas and beer:uhoh: )

Time to start restocking the ammo bunker :D

Jim K - nice to meet you.....

I was there from 11 till 2:30. Had no idea who if anyone was from THR. Nice range but not conducive to bringing a lot of guns. I brought my M1A M1 Garand M1 Carbine CAR a 22 and a .308 bolt but wound up just shooting my CAR and .308 Bolt since I didn't want to lug them down the hill. I think I liked the picnic better as my wife and I actually got to meet some of the MD people.

Great time as always, got to meet some good people and shoot some neat guns (I still feel bad about that G43 Jim). I unfortunately had to retire a couple early in the shoot my K98 seems to have headspace problems (Thanks Jim!) and my Camp 45 shook it's red dot mount loose after a couple magazines. My 1911 seems to be working good again though so at least that's some good news!

Let's not wait so long for the next one!

I had a great time - thanks to Spot77 and Chaim for letting me shoot their ARs for the first time - loved the spring sound!

Sorry I was so far away from anapex and girlwith a gun - next time maybe it will be less crowded and we can all get lanes closer.

Very happy that both my first time shooters (SKS and Mosin 91/30) put 80 rounds each down range with no problem - though I think with that Mosin my shoulder might not be so happy tomorrow!:D

Definately up for a next time.

Molonlabe.....sorry I missed you. I got there about 1:45. I thought I saw you there, but having only met you once I wasn't sure if that was you or not.......amd then we all got lanes so far apart.

And it was crowded there today.

Chaim and I discussed another handgun shoot in a few months. I'll send out a mass pm to direct everybody to the new thread when the time comes. Maybe an early fall picnic again too.....

I meant to bring my camera today, but my head was still a little foggy and I forgot it.

but my head was still a little foggy
Paul ... all this mention of margerita excesses etc .. heck, musta bin a grand evening last night!:D

Sounds like you guys had fun .. main pre requisite .. and was sorry not to be along this time. I did tho yesterday enjoy a great range session (and man - you shoulda seen the facility - private club .. set in 160 acres ... all sorts of nice stuff ....... must take a pic sometime).

Hopefully (tho summer will be well gone .. <sigh>.) ..... I might make it down there by November time .. tho hardly want to contemplate that far ahead .... just yet.

Anapex,

Thought you might like an update on the G.43. All fixed and working fine. The dust cover had jumped out of its track (maybe I hadn't put it in right the last time I had the gun apart). It got scratched a bit where it doesn't show, but that is all. Maybe I'll leave it out the next time I shoot the gun; it isn't really needed for firing.

BTW, for those who might be over that way, the range in Frederick has only 50 and 100 yard rifle targets, and 7 and 25 yard pistol, but is bigger and is open air so is a lot less claustrophobic.

Jim

Sorry it took me so long to post.

As usual it was fun...got to try a couple nice guns.

Jim Keenan, thank you for letting me try your Johnson Rifle, I don't know if anyone could tell but I couldn't get that stupid grin off my face while I was shooting it. I love it (great gun in and of itself, and being into military history- man...). Here is a page on the Johnson for anyone who is interested: http://www.johnsonautomatics.com/ The only problem is now I really want to get one, and they are quite hard to find and in shooting condition they are well out of any price range that I can consider for quite some time. Oh well.

Anapex, thanks for the use of the M1Garand. Again, great rifle, and being into military history, I must get one. Not sure when, but sometime in the next year (I hope).

Girlwithagun, Spot77, greyhound, it was good to see you all. Greyhound, that is one nice Nagant you've got.

Talking to Spot we're thinking the next one should be an indoor pistol shoot. Wait for the fall for another outdoor shoot. Aug is usually a heavy vacation month so I doubt we'd get that many people. Probably Sept would be best for the next one (probably mid to late in the month so those with kiddies and the teacher among us can get the school year started without distraction).
