Ideal weapons for college students, in class.

My son actually defended himself with a folding knife last week at college when he went for a late night run and was jumped by two thugs in an apparent mugging attempt. The attack took place just off-campus and in view of his dorm. He didn't have his wallet but he did have his Camillus Heat 4" folder that he bought while in the Marines. He was knocked down from behind and kicked in the head and side, suffering a cracked rib and a concussion. He was able to get his knife open and heard one them say "OH S_ _T" at the sound of the blade flicking open. That attacker backed off, but he drew blood on the other attacker (who was drunk) and then they both ran off. Because of the dark and confusion my son doesn't know the extent of the injury he inflicted on the one guy. The police have since then been checking the local emergency rooms for someone with knife wounds coming in for treatment but have so far come up empty. I don't know what the knife laws are on and around his campus, but the police congratulated him on his actions.

There is no one ideal physical object to be employed as weapon - period.

The faster folks accept this, the faster they can start on the journey of being responsible for their safety.
Un-clutter the brain, and use that brainpower as you travel along this journey.
If you, or anyone else ever announces they have "arrived" , they have broadcast instead they have never taken the first step on the journey being responsible for their safety, or much of anything in their life - period.

Instead of doing an internet search for gun, knife, OC , cane, or martial art, one might be wise to conduct a search on what has happened in a shooting and how folks responded and survived.

Virginia Tech, is a good one to look up, and read.

Another thing to assist in un-cluttering the brain. You are dying. You started dying the split second ou drew your first breath.
There is nothing you or anyone else can do to prevent death. No weapon exists to prevent this death from happening. When you are scheduled to die, you die.

I have been in a college class, and the threat was a bomb, more than once.
Now what in the world can I purchase to be the ideal weapon against a bomb?

I have been on my campus, and campuses besides my own at the time, where shots were fired.

Let me share what my thoughts were on the most recent.
I took prudent steps for my safety before I went onto that campus, and while on campus.

In the real world there is no start buzzers, no timers, no classifications, qualifiers, rankings, trophies, or some hot babe in a bikini that will kiss me on the cheek and present my winning prizes.

The start buzzer is real deal gunfire, incoming has right of way, and I don't give a rip what kind of gun, caliber, or type of ammo.

Since I have been shot at before, and have seen gunshot wounds , worked in a OR, seen folks both survive and die from gunshots, been in on organ harvests, read Virginia Tech reports of various perspectives, including the gunshots, where placed, and how folks survived-

I used cover, and kept moving to better cover. My start buzzer was real gunfire, and screams.
I also had a very distinct sound that only incoming has.

It might be my day to get shot, injured, maimed, or dead, Mentors said for this to happen on my terms, not evil.
Armed with Knowledge gleaned from living as long as I have, life experiences and observations , I kept moving, using cover, and this includes the heavy backpack I have.

Don't quit , until the miracle happens , or until you have been dead for 5 minutes

Lady Luck is always welcome and has a standing invite to show up anytime.

I am heading to the parking deck, and there is a younger lady, with her foot in a cast and on crutches. You talk about grit, that lady had grit!
She was using cover best can, to get distance too.
She had a few rounds of incoming, her way, and while she winced, cussed out loud, she kept taking an action, the best she could.

The lady actually just dropped like a rock one time, and got behind cover.
She just picked up her crutches and dropped like a rock.
Like I said, grit.

Shots died down, and I took off for that deck, and at full tilt boogie, my game plan was to assist that lady and take her with me, to safer cover.
Shots started up again...plans are like this, they go "kaput" the moment implemented.

To heck with the rules of a guy hitting on a gal, or being inappropriate, or even hands on another without asking.
I am a southern gentleman, I know about this stuff, I also know when serious situations hit, rules fly out the window and the name of the game is to survive.

My responsibility is to me first, because if I don't , I cannot be of any good to anyone else.
I become part of the problem, a hindrance, and can impede first responders by doing something I should not.

I am over 50 years old , with a backpack and in dead run, I picked up that lady, with her backpack, and crutches and kept on going inside the parking deck where there was more distance, concrete, and vehicles for cover.

"Sorry ma'am" - I said with sincere apology in my voice, and body language.
"No apology needed and thank you sir" she replied.

My hands went onto her person without permission first off, and second they went places inappropriate. We are adults and in a situation such as this, this is what happens.

I had no gun, and I cannot recall what pocket knife I had. Case Peanut, SAK Classic, Bantam, Case Slimline Trapper...?? I forget. I can share my thoughts did NOT run to some physical thing to keep me safe, or that lady.

This was multiple persons shooting multiple guns. I could not only hear where they were, there were times I could see them, or know where they were based on the incoming to me, that lady, and structures around me, and reactions of others.

Bomb Threats?
I have no frigging idea where a bomb is. Or if there is more than one, where they are.
I do not know if bomb(s) are to set off with a timer, or will be set off by remote.

More than one of these bomb threats I have been "exposed to". Some at night.
I do not own a Surefire, or any similar light. Just me, still if I am outside in the dark when the word a bomb threat was called in, I do NOT want a bright light to signal where I am.
I do not know if someone is watching and if I get near where a bomb is, (a) they are going to set off the bomb by remote, or (b) have a rifle and will shoot me to prevent me from finding it.

My role is to take care of me first...
First Responders have their respective roles.

My take:
One ideal weapon is Knowledge.
It is not a physical object.

I do believe in good shoes to allow one good footing, so there is an example of something "physical" and in essence is a "weapon".

Oh I know about things such as using a patch cord to assist in dealing with evil.
I can tie a door shut, or use a stapler with a patch cord to have something in which to hit someone with.

Fire extinguishers may not be ideal either, still they can and have been used to stop threats.

Door Stops.
If folks are set on buying a physical object to assist in staying safe, buy a $1 rubber door stop.
Not very glamorous, hip , slick or kewl, still it "might" be the ideal tool for the task to keep a door that opens "in" from being opened.

Knowledge is a cornerstone in staying safe.

Which way does the door open for your classroom, and the restroom down the hall?
Again, that door stop might be ....only if you have the knowledge to know which way the door opens.

hmmmm I was wondering what caliber doorstopper I should get...LOL only kidding...Nice post! Some good food for thought....Doc:D

By "half inch rounds," do you mean cartridges, spuscg? "Gun canes" are illegal in lots of places, and I believe that they're NFA AOWs, and I still wouldn't carry one myself if they were as legal as books.

I like gadgets but I don't like gimmicks.

No guns in the Non-Firearm Weapons forum threads, remember? If you were referring to some other kind of thing, then please accept my apology.

wow that was unnecessary. im not going to carry guns in school until it becomes legal chill out. it may not be legal until im an leo going for my masters. a can in .50ae would be cool though

Well I lost my reply.

Basically I outlined as to why I was not out of line.

Still I deleted the other post.

You know what?
None of you folks have ever been around when I had real life threats, and survived them.

Do what you want, my giveadamnsbusted.

Dang, I was in class and I missed it. I guess I'll follow threads in which boosting 'S' doesn't get met with an increase in the value of 'N'.

Well, Heck

Damn, Steve, I never got to read yer post.

You know, every so often someone shows up who knows more, is smarter, and has more experience than guys with nearly 40 years on the street.

Every so often, someone appears who has more expertise than a guy whose job title has included the word "scientist."

Heck, we even get fellas that have a better grasp of tactics than a guy with martial arts belts and a recent tour on the ground over in the sandbox.

In general, our (very) senior members and moderators are reluctant to trot out their resume when a discussion like this gets rolling, as they don't want to come across like they're speaking "ex cathedra" when they're just trying to impart a little wisdom they've picked up along the road.

Me, I don't have a reputation, decades of experience, a degree in the "hard" sciences, or a whole mess of combat training.

I'm just some guy.

I have, however, managed to get to be an OLD guy by paying attention to guys who have the kinds of credentials I listed above.

Y'all are free to listen to whomever you want.

Me?

I'll take sm, hso, JShirley, and BullfrogKen any day of the week.

If I learn a fraction of what these guys know, I will be one seriously well prepared puppy.

Yeah, I'm ignorant and inexperienced.

But I have an advantage: I know that I'm ignorant and inexperienced.

Helps me to better pay attention.

Steve, I saw the post. I thought you might later erase it. Good choice. There's no need to prove your point, or pass your lessons onto those who aren't worth your knowledge. Rule #1 for me is, "Are you worth my time?"

Arfin, I'm just a guy, too. I'm no expert.

I only know what I know because of luck.

10 years ago a guy I worked with at the firm I got hired onto heard I had an interest in shooting. He asked me if I wanted to join him for a Study Day, and I said yes. If I hadn't moved into the area and by happenstance met him, I'd sill be ignorant. I wasn't seeking it out; it found me. Everything that I've been involved in, or exposed to, or the people I've met all along the way came about because I took that invitation.

Had that introduction not occurred, in my ignorance I'd still think I knew everything, too.

My experiences are the sum of others that have gone before me, and of the fine people I still study with. I try to be a good student. I recognized those people had something I didn't, and decided it was what I was looking for. So I resigned myself to going back, and I still do. I listen much more than I speak, and I learn much more than I pass on.

Luck. I was in the right place at the right time. That's it dude.

I'm not any better than the guys I study with; I sit at their feet and learn.

Nuth'n for stink but to throw the trash out and clean up the mess that trolls make.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

A Good Sturdy Metal Pen...Pencil with Plumbers Tape around the shaft for strenght to aid penetration...School Books, Magazine, Book Bag, Nice Leather belt, Scarf, Good Pair of Boots, Credit Card, an Old DVD which could be snapped in half and it's sharp edges used like a knife in an emergency situation, just about anything even Bottle Water or Wallet could be used in defense effectively....Best thing you could do is get some training on how to use these improvised weapons with someone who really knows how to use them.....Doc

I don't know if this sounds like McGyver or a convict.

A Zebra F-701 pen is a fairly nice SS barreled pen available at Staples or Office Depot for under 8 bucks. Not only does it write well but makes a dandy neck sticker in a pinch.

Weapon In Class?

You don't need one.

Ever.

Nothing bad ever happens in class.

At all.

Nobody ever walks in with a pistol and starts shooting. That's a myth made up by the media to frighten small children.

You should absolutely never be prepared. People who prepare for trouble are paranoid. You should never be paranoid. Be trusting. Someone will protect you, even if something bad does happen.

Class is safe. School is safe. Government is looking after you.

Weapons are for haters and crazy people.

You don't want to be crazy people, do you?

Be sane. Be safe. Disarm and let us take care of everything.

Dan H,

Welcome to THR.

In response to your question, hopefully never. But students, faculty and staff have to come and go from the classroom and with restrictions that some colleges put on them someone that wants to comply with those restrictions also may want to consider all the options open to them for self defense.

Arfin is right. All you need is a cell phone.:)

I would NEVER carry a weapon for self-defense . The police will protect me.:D

:what:

College Algebra class: Throw the Quadratic Formula at them, use Factorials for back up.

Business Law: Snag Blackstone and throw the book at them.

Anatomy and Physiology:
Lecture: 5:50 pm. 80 students. Animal House Food Fight
There is no way in hades evil can defeat 80 students with Soda bottles, Soda cans, McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, Large Surpreme Pizza, Coffee, plus back packs, umbrellas and one six year old daughter that beat up the 8 year old neighbor boy and is in class with mom.

Lab: 40 students with dissected cats, formaldehyde, Scalpels, 4 Skeletons ( two gals, two guys, and you can the difference as the pelvic is different) each with 206 bones, plus the sheep brains, eye balls, skulls, ...glass lab stuff, microscopes, ...backpacks...and one stool that is lethal as it is busted, everyone knows it, and we don't want it tossed, as we might hate someone and insist they sit down on this deathtrap.

English Lit with Goofy Brit. All you have to do is throw her butt at evil , or outrun her. She is against guns, defending one's self and everyone should submit.
So "submit" her.

Food Court: Some crooks are dumb. You do not get between broke, hungry college students and food.

Gym: Use the volleyball net to snag evil, toss in swimming pool, and use weights from weight room to "marinate".

Between Bldgs: Those emergency / security call boxes with the blue lights.
That pole that runs up from phone with the light, is not attached real well, so club the sucker to death, and then call security with the number of the call box , for them to send the meat wagon.

Between parking lots: Pick a Frat house, it does not matter, and just yell " He is stealing the keg!"

Think out of the box...

Not everything is learned from a building with "Education" on the door.

Im a college student and have thought about this considerably.
I carry a Kershaw Blur, it has a grip tape like grip, assisted opening and a pretty nice blade. carry it clipped on your pocket and it can be opened in less than 3 seconds. I have had mine for over 2 years without a single problem. Absolutly the best knife I have ever owned!
