Thank you Jim. Don't want to sell it or anything as it has been in the family since new. I will try the oil and coarse rag approach.
Lightly buffing with oiled 000 or 0000 steel wool will take that speckled rust off without damaging the remaining bluing. It should clean up nicely. Around here, I would expect that gun to have $400-500 on the sticker at a local gunshop or show table. Although Model 10s were made in large numbers, the 5" barrel isnt super common. They are fine revolvers. Glad you want to keep it in the family. Nice gun!

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...

a: 38 Special CTG
b: 3 inch
c: square
d: 5 shot
e: fixed
f: 72785. A20
g: 36-1

72785 is not the serial number. the serial number is found on the butt of the gun. Model 36 got the change of -1 in 1967 and continued until 2988 when the -2 was introduced.
Get the serial number off the butt and can narrow down the ship date

Date of manufacture??

C 174284
Smith & Wesson revolver
38 special
4” barrel
Square butt
6 shot
Smith and Wesson never published dates of manufacture. Your gun shipped between 1948-1951.. Serial numbers C1-C223998 were shipped in those 4 years. Yours was likely by the math 1949?
