Thanks Radagast!

Radagast, the info you provided is very helpful and appreciated...thanks! It sounds like I wouldn't be committing any "sin" by shooting the proper ammo and enjoying this gun, right? :D

I'd appreciate production dates for these: 1) Model 66-2 Ser.# 200xx...And 2) Model 17-2 Ser. # K607xxx. Thank you in advance.

Hello again!
My grandfather has a little Smith & Wesson model 30-1 that I would like to date.

Its a model 30-1 Serial Number: 79637X
Blued-In EX condition
Double-action
.32 S&W Long
about 1'' barrel
pretty small little thing

Also has 2 weird markings, one looks like an "E" and I can't make out the other, they are in picture #2.

Any kind of info would be great!

Your Model 30-1 .32 Hand Ejector was manufactured between 1961 (Serial number 7129540) & 1970 (serial number 826977).
Because it has the concave thumb piece and there is no uncheckered diamond around the grip screws I can refine it down further, to the period 1968-1970.

Prior to 1961 these were built on the smaller Improved I frame. After 1961 S&W consolidated their smaller guns on the .38 special sized J frame. The dash-1 represents the change to the J frame. Any modern J frame round butt grip should fit the gun.

The markings in the frame cut out are called assembly numbers, used to track parts in the factory. They have no meaning after the gun is assembled. If you remove the grips you may find more assembly numbers on the flats of the grip frame.

Just purchased. UIB, has owners manual and S&W tools. Looks like it has been fired less than 100 rounds. What a find! Got it for mid-400s. :)

    Thank You

BurninBrass:
Your Model 19-3 Combat Magnum dates to 1971.

VirginiaHam:
That is pretty amazing for a 50 year old gun. Unfortunately, unless another member has had S&Ws historian Mr Roy Jinks research their model 36 from that period you aren't likely to get a more precise response. For a fee of $50 Mr Jinks will go through the original shipping dockets until he finds your gun, then send you a letter stating the shipping date, specifications and shipping address. This won't add any value to a fairly common firearm, unless it shows a connection with a famous person or incident, but if you have the cash to spare it will satisfy your curiosity.

Hello,

Was referred here by another member.

a) 357 Magnum

'Nother New Guy in Town

So, hello, from the old, new guy. First rattle out of the box, and I have my hand out.
My new old Smith is my second revolver; the first being a Ruger .22 Single Six from 1971. Today's un-birthday gift to me is an almost pristine 4" .38, model 10-7. Sometimes life is good....sometimes. Obviously, my hand is out for the new, old revolver's birth date.

A) .38 Special
B) 5" Barrel
C) Square K frame
d) 6 Shot
e) AAV0550
f) 10-7

If it helps; in the area of the crane is E17 and the numbers 81161.

Thanks in advance for your trouble,
jc

Your Model 10-7 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel was probably manufactured Between October & December 1982. The Standard Catalog of S&W noted serial AAFxxxx shipping in October & ABLxxxx in December.
The other markings under the crane are assemby numbers, used to track parts in the factory. They have no meaning after the gun is assembled.

cru:
No need for pics. Your Model 66 Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured in 1975.

rromeo:
Nope. The Standard Catalog of S&W doesn't have month by month serial ranges. It has serial number ranges that can range from a couple of months to decades, depending on the model and age. Your gun just happened to fall into one of the smaller ranges.
The SCSW is a private venture, I'm guessing the date ranges are based on individual guns they or other collectors have paid the $50 to have Roy Jinks at S&W supply a factory letter.
You could pay the $50 for a letter yourself and get the shipping date and address, but it wouldn't add to the value of the gun, just help satisfy your curiousity.

Your .38 Military & Police, the pre model 10, was manufactured between 1954 to 1956, serial range for those years was C277555 to C402923.

I have two to learn about. The first is a Model 31-1. It has a 4" barrel, square butt grip, 6 shot cylinder, fixed sights, and blued finish. The serial # on the grip is H27578. The caliber is 32 Smith and Wesson long. What would be an approximate age?

Second is marked 32-20 ctg. on the barrel. It has a 5" barrel, and a square butt grip. It has fixed sights, and is a six shot. The serial # on the grip is 117550. The number on the yoke/crane is 91298. It has been re-nickle plated, as the hammer and trigger are both nickle. I know that it would be a hand ejector model, but what change number and what would be an approximate year of birth for this one. Any help appreciated, thanks, Joe.
