I really want an M1a, but I can't afford the $1k +that they cost. Seeing several threads here about them, and if the ban sunsets, and with Chinas most favored trade status, do you think we will be able to import norinco polytechs again. It looks like a good starter, then you could always have the receiver rebuilt with ISGI parts later. There was a thread here to a Canadian Supplier who was selling these for $399(Canadian) which according to their converter was about $310 US. Thats less than I have seen receivers for. Just a musing, it was a slow Friday night.

Looks like they may have found a way to stop it from ending. See below.

Here's the deal:

The U.S. Senate will soon vote on S. 659, a bill that will "outlaw lawsuits
against lawful firearms manufacturers." This bill will be voted on in one
month. Most gun owners consider this bill to be a GOOD thing, but...

Sen. Diane Finesteine put a "rider" on this bill. The rider number is S.
1034. Its purpose is to permanently repeal the sunset date on the assault
weapons ban, to ban the importation of large capacity ammunition feeding
devices, and for other purposes.

So what does this mean?

If we do nothing and the Senate passes this bill next month, then it's over.
Bush will sign it and there will be no sunset of the AW ban.

A vote on this issue in the Senate would be very close, but could go either
way. We need every single vote we can get. Please call both of your
Senators, urging them to oppose S. 1034.

Never called your senators before? Now's a good time to call them. Call
(202) 224-2315 and (202) 224-3353. Tell the aides this:

"The Senate will soon be voting on S. 659 - a bill that will outlaw lawsuits
against lawful firearms manufacturers. Senator Diane Feinstein put a rider

on this bill. The rider number is S. 1034. This rider MUST be removed from
S. 659."

I don't think it'll affect the price of M1A's given that the only difference between a pre ban and post ban was the inclusion of the (gasp!) bayonet lug.

What will change is the price of NORMAL capacity magazines, which is vastly more important.

I'm hoping that The Stupidest Law Ever Written does indeed die a much deserved death this year, and I will celebrate by buying something appropriately nasty.

Anyway there are plenty of fine domestically produced rifles in that class, so you shouldn't want for anything.

WIll the importation of firearms in a competing class as the M1A drive the price down? I think it will. My last big buying binge in 1993 pegged M1As at around $700. The sunset will also allow other domestic mfgs. to make competing EBRs as well.

Let the market prevail :D :D :D

The problem with expecting prices to drop on EBRs, is that an American company CAN already produce neutered EBRs within the confines of the AWB. Look at the AR, prices are already as low as they will get on an American produced AR. I do not think that there is a substantial savings to be had by an American manufacturer besides Springfield making M1A’s. No one is mass-producing AKs or G3s any cheaper here, not counting parts kits guns. DSA is doing the FALs but not at any savings over an imported weapon. Without the benefit of cheap labor you cannot expect the cheap prices.

…just my $.02

Is the rider an Internet Myth?

Folks, S.1034 is a standalone bill. Riders do not have numbers - they are merely amendments to existing bills. At this time there are NO amendments to S.659 because the pro-gun crowd controls the Senate Judiciary Committee and anti-gun amendments can't be added until the bill gets brought to the floor.

HOWEVER... the bill is scheduled to be brought to the floor on March 3rd for three days of debate. Senator Feinstein has already indicated that she WILL try to attach S.1034 as an amendment to S.659. Right now the story is a myth/bad understanding of the current situation but if you don't let your Senator know that you want S.659 passed WITHOUT ANY ANTIGUN AMENDMENTS, it might well become true.

You can locate your senators here.

You can also contact them online here or by typing yoursenatorslastname.senate.gov into your browser.

Normally, I would recommend snail mail; but with the recent ricin scare following anthrax, that may arrive too late. Please email or call your Senators before March 3rd if you don't want this myth to be reality.

P.S. Please spread the word to other boards clarifying this.

TOO - What would you bet me?
How about if it sunsets, I'll resist the deep urge to knock off a liquor store with a bayonet lug. If it doesn't sunset, then the system worked to suppress access to bayonet lugs and and we all have nothing to worry about.
