If you could only have one revolver...and it had to be new

It must be a model that is currently being produced. This will NOT be used for CCW at all, so that is not a consideration for this discussion. The gun will be used solely on the range, may be on the home defense rotation, and as a hunting sidearm (NOT a primary hunting gun).
Considering your criteria....

A .357 magnum Ruger GP100 with a 6" barrel.

I chose the 4" barrel model because I don't hunt and it's slightly easier to carry than the 6" model.

S&W revolvers are great too but I think they are considerable overpriced.

IF money is no object... one of those shiny Premium grade Freedom Arms.... I'd love an Octagonal barrelled .45 or .44 mag...

Reasonably, though 45/44/41 Super Blackhawk would serve me nicely for targets, home, or hunting.

Go shoot everything you can get your hands on. When you find your self grinning look at what your have in your hand. I shoot a lot of guns before I picked up a Ruger gp-100. I found my self grinning. I tryed the four inch. I tryed the six inch. I bought the six. The reduction in muzzle blast and recoil from four to six inches is impressive. I just seemed to put more lead where I wanted it to go from further back with the six. The pins fly further and the plate just don't stand a chance.

My gp100 is my "go play at the range gun". With a box of wad cutters it has tought a lot of people how to shoot. At night it is full of 125 gr golden sabers and lives in my bedroom. I hope I never have to use it there but if I have to I am very confident that it will work.

Since it has to be new...

S&W 625 in .45LC. It's a cartridge that can be loaded target mild to light .44 Mag performance.

Since you said hunting that limits me (in Colorado) to .41 magnum or above to be legal for big game.

Self defense doesn't have to mean a DA revolver, but more than likely it does.

Range work covers a bunch of territory.

You want a 4 inch DA 44 Magnum.

I'd check and see if you can get a Ruger Redhawk in a 4inch barrel. Barring that an S&W model 29 would be fine.

If an SA fits your bill, a 5.5 inch Ruger Vaquero in 44 makes a good 'back up' short range hunting arm. The Super Blackhawk and SB Hunter have longer barrels and adjustable sights, but they weigh a good deal more.

I'm with BCRider, I have plans myself for a 625. I currently own a Ruger Sp101 2.25" and a S&W 629 6". Both are great guns, but if it is mostly going to see range use I would go with the 625 or a GP100 4".

Only one? cry.gif

It'd be a Ruger GP100.
I don't like the Smith ILs or the looks of most of them.
(I DO drool over the M22s & M25s though)

But the GP100 is built like a tank!
You can seriously abuse & ignore that one & it'll still last forever.

For a one revolver only world, if you want a range plinker that you could hunt something larger than a ground squirrel with, consider either the 625JM or 627 Pro:

IMG_3511.jpg

The 625JM uses .45 ACP's in moonclips or .45 Auto Rim. You can buy .45 ACP's anywhere - even at a WallyWorld (UMC 230gr FMJ 250/$85). The 627 Pro will chamber .38 Special or .357 Magnums - singly or in moonclips. Both have spring-loaded front sights (The HiViz sights were installed in seconds!) and great triggers NIB. Plink or hunt - your choice with either.

Now, if you don't hunt anything larger than a rabbit, I have another consideration - a 617!

IMG_3904.jpg

My 4" 617 is one of those range guns you dream of - accurate to a fault - and CHEAP to shoot. 550 packs of Federal 36gr plated HP's from WallyWorld are $16, when you can find them. It'll shoot just about anything in a .22 LR case - and Longs and Shorts, if you can find them. The DS-10 Speedloader, HiViz sight, and Ahrends retro target grips were extras. No, it won't drop anything in a steel plate with a lot of mass - unless you hit it two or three times quickly! Pure fun!

If I could own only one firearm, it would be a 4" Ruger GP100.

If I could own only one revolver, it would be a 4" Ruger GP100.

Edited to add: The 4" barrel reflects my need for concealment. One who does not conceal weapons may wish to go with a 5" or 6" barrel. Moreover, I used one one of my 4" GP100 sixguns in a defensive shooting, and I plan to own it until I die, so if I had to divest myself of all other firearms, it would stay.

I'm just a revolver noob with a different perspective...

It depends on what type of hunting you intend to do, but for range use and home defense, I'd go for a .38 Special +P with 4" or 6" barrel.

I only have 500 rounds through one of the most high recommended all-around guns - the 686, 4". I'm not a recoil junkie, do not reload, and prefer to save $ when throwing lead down range, so that usually means (90%+) using .38 specials. Well shooting shorter-cased shells in a magnum leaves one stubborn carbon crud ring in the cylinders, let me tell you. Maybe I haven't perfected the cleaning routine yet, but for me, it about doubles the cleaning time for the gun, when compared to shooting full-sized magnum casings - not to mention revolvers are already harder to clean than semis.

I find revolvers more fun to shoot, and love shooting this 686, but I'm already starting to winch at the thought of cleaning my 686 after a range session, and am beginning to find myself reaching for a different gun from the safe :(.

Also, for home defense, I see lots of comments from people that would rather shoot .38+P from .357s, than .357s. Reasons being permanent hearing damage without ear protection, blinded by own muzzle flash, and over penetration.

Did I mention I hate cleaning :D

The one I think I will be picking up for my birthday before too long.

Ruger GP100, 4" stainless .357

Only one,...it's gonna be a Ruger Blackhawk Convertable,....357/.38/9mm with A 6 1/2 inch barrel. Fun to shoot,..carrys well,..variations in ammo make it a good all around choice for the OP's intended purposes. YMMV

Some musings, after going through all the posts:

Someone mentioned GP100 triggers needing work. I disagree, provided one has the time and patience to cherry-pick among many. By doing so, only two of my GP100 sixguns had or have triggers that need attention. One was my first one, bought in 1991, when all seemed to have rough triggers, but this one was not so bad, and I cleaned it up a bit, so it is really nice now. The second was from a recent limited run with 5" barrels, so if I wanted that barrel length, I had to take what I could get, as there were no more at the distributor.

My several other GP100s, my several SP101s, my Speed Six, and Security Six are all equipped with quite good trigger pulls.

There is nothing wrong with a good S&W, but they do not have triggers pulls any better than a cherry-picked Ruger.

I love a good S&W Mode 19, but the idea man behind it, the late, great Bill Jordan, said that it was meant to be shot mostly with .38 Specials. This tells me the Model 19 is a true carry gun, not a range gun. In actual practice, my Model 19 is rarely fired; just enough for familiarization and function testing. My actual training occurs with a K-frame .22, and with heavier revolvers that can stand up to extensive recoil.

The SP101 is certainly a contender for the title of an only revolver. I carry these more than any other handgun; the snubbier length being better for pocket carry, and the 3.06" being a nicely compact urban holster gun. I do carry more than one SP101 at a time, much of the time. These are wonderful weapons; life is good.

Only one revolver, I'll take a Freedom Arms M83 .454 Casual with a spare cylinder in .45 ACP, premier grade with an octagonal barrel cut to either 7.5" or 6.75" (if they would cut it for me). Add in a variety of front sights and rear blade styles, plus scope mounts for magnified optics and a Trijicon RMR.

Second choice is a Freedom Arms 97 in .357 with a cylinder in 9mm. Same specifications as above.

Third choice would be a Smith PC 627 8 shot .357 with the 5" barrel.
