I have a chance to purchase a 25-06 rifle. Can anyone give me information on this cartridge. Is it a good varmit cartridge, ease of reloading, ect?
Thanks for any information you can provide.

It's a great all-around cartridge for varmints and game animals up to and including elk. Very flat-shooting, gentle on the shoulder. It's ideal niche is deer and pronghorn. For varminting, it's a bit much on recoil and muzzle blast to tolerate high volume shooting like you would encounter on a busy praire dog town (200+ rounds in a day). For large elk, proper bullet selection and good shot placement is a must, since the lighter .257" bullets are unlikely to penetrate the heavy shoulder bones of these animals.

A .25-06 was my first rifle, bought on my 18th B-day. I've used it for praire dogs, coyotes, pronghorn, deer & elk with great success. However, I now have dedicated varmint rifles (.17 Rem & .220 Swift) and a much more potent elk rifle (8mm Rem Mag) to give a greater margin of error if I find myself facing a very long shot on a very large animal. The .25-06 is still my primary deer and pronghorn rifle, though, and also gets carried for cow elk.

It is more predator than varmint IMO and is superior to most smaller diameter rounds for distance shooting coyotes with the 90- gr bullets. It is one of the best for the deer and antelope sized animals with the 100-120 gr. As said you must be very selective if you intend to go for elk but it will suffice. I am not a one gun do it all guy so I use mine for deer with 100 gr Bal Tips but in recent yrs. I have hunted deer with ML so it has sat in the safe. I have a lot of sheep points and will probably use it when I draw. Can't go wrong to have at least one in the safe.

Just read a Handloader article yesterday where they gave praise to the 25-06 over 257 Roberts and 257 Weatherby. Like MachIV said they also talked about it being ideal for anything up to and including elk. I have an uncle that is a one gun kinda guy and he has a 25-06.

I was with a guy in Wyoming who killed a cow moose with a .25-06 and a 117 gr. bullet.

Great "beanfield" gun (after a .280 improved) in my opinion.

I have a .25-06 & I love it, I have to agree with Snag, my brother is kind of a one gun guy but he has two, a .25-06 & a .270, he says what one won`t do the other will................

Thanks for the information guys. Do any of you reload for the 25-06? If so,
anything I should know about problems or anything? Thanks again.
