They have a certain reputation as far as quality control goes.

Not a good reputation.

In fact, said reputation rivals the reputation for honesty of that great American corporate entity...Enron.

It rivals the reputation for competence of Gray Davis.

The reputation of modesty of Donald Trump.

Shall I continue?

PS: they suck.

Arright. IF you want a gun that's the same size and similar feel as the Colt SAA, but has a transfer bar safety, the Beretta Stampede is the top choice. If you can go a bit bigger the Rugers are tough as nails. If you do NOT need the transfer bar and are willing to deal with five-up carry (lower the hammer on an empty cylinder bore) the USFAs are superb, the best "true SAA clones" made.

Colt Cowboy

On the flip side, I have two friends who purchased Cowboys last year and love them. They've been reliable, accurate, and have saved wear and tear on their much more expensive Colt SAA's. I've shot them, and except for the 3 click action, they feel darned close to the original. (of which I have two, one of which I shoot a lot) Flipping again, I was in a local shop when a Cowboy owner brought his gun in, complaining that the gun shot 6 inches to the right. The barrel had been overturned, and the front blade leaned to the left like the famous tower. So, typical Colt, quality control was hit or miss with the Cowboy as with so many of their products. Don't misunderstand, I enjoy and collect Colts-I have 12-but I inspect pretty carefully before I buy.

I have 2 of the 4 3/4 inch guns and I am very happy with mine. Both have held up well and are quite accurate with cowboy loads.

I shot one a couple of years ago. It came through the shop here, brand new, 45 Colt. I tried different loads for the little gun till I found a load that shot POA. I then loaded 500 of these. Load? 250 gr. RNFP and 7 grs. of 231. Other than the sights, it was easy to shoot and grouped the load 1 1/4" and 25 yards. Found several tool marks on the gun and finish could have been better. Other than that they are ok but I wouldn't trade my Ruger for one.
