Is a 9mm sufficient for...?

If you do your part, the 9mm will do it's, regardless of the bullet type. Certainly, some bullets are better than others, but they will ALL kill you if you get hit in the right place.

like phil degraves said its all about bullet placement my dads killed more beef with a 22 and if a 22 will drop a full size herford then a 9mm will kill a man like the man said bullet placement that means practice practice practice that is a nother good reason for the 9mm less pricey on ammo

Once again, 147gr JHPs got a bad reputation since they were originally meant for submachineguns. When people started shooting them from handguns, they weren't developing enough velocity to expand reliably.

Modern defensive JHPs, even the 147gr ones, expand reliably in gelatin tests even though they are subsonic with muzzle velocities less than 1000fps.

If you look at the raw numbers, the 147s seem to go slower and have less muzzle energy than the 124gr 9mm loads, but their penetration in gelatin is as good or better than 124gr JHPs, and they expand to a bigger size.

Look up gelatin tests of MODERN 147gr JHP ammo before you continue spreading the story that they suck.

Now, 147gr bullets aren't right for every pistol. If you find that your gun shoots straighter with a lighter bullet, then by all means, go with a lighter bullet! The rate of twist of your handgun's rifling may be better suited to lighter bullets.

The 9mm Luger cartridge, in a jacketed hollowpoint loading, is perfectly adequate for defense against two-legged predators - as long as you hit the target. The armed citizen is unlikely to have to shoot through auto glass or other intermediate barriers, and the "target" is likely to be close and facing you squarely. Now, a black bear is larger and tougher than most humans, but one that has not become accustomed to human presence is more likely to avoid you. I fear four- (and no-) legged beasts far less than two-legged ones, myself.

is a 9mm too limited?

No, in a stand off situation you want to get off as many shots as possible for maxium hits, the 9 mm is excellent for a quick recovery and will allow you to acomplish it. Practice rapid combat shooting once you have become proficient with you firearm. Target shooting is rewarding for tight groups, but in the street it's not reality. Practice a quick draw rapid fire method. Use a potent round like the Golden Saber 124gr +P, or Gold Dot 124gr +P and you won't be disappointed, I've been there. Hope you never have to be.....

9mm, no problem, For conceal Carry and SD my Beretta 9000S with 9mm +P+ 124GR. Hydra-Shok, JHP is all I need. By the way the Ruger SR9 with the same load gives me 18 rounds to even the fight, man or beast.

my favorite 9mm ammo.

Federal Blue Box 9BP 115 grain. If you can get the +p+ version. Good if not the standard works good in 4" barrels and above.

Federal Hydra-Shock 124 grain

Remington Golden Sabers 147 grain.

If I am going into bear country I would probably load my XD9 with DPX. Although I don't like the DPX for home defense.

+P ammo is just as good as a 40.I just ordered my P95 today for $321 W/ss slide from Budsgunshop.com

Just so you know, the same gun is available at cdnn investments blued for 249.99. Take that, 12 bucks to ship it and 25 for a FFl transfer and your looking at the same gun for 289.00. Check it out at cdnninvestments.com (though for some stupid reason you have to call to get the quoted price).

Georgia has feral hogs in addition to bears, don't forget. However, 9mm would be fine for any of them. My next pistol will be a 9mm

I'd get it. I doubt you'll EVER need it against ANY black bear where you are much less a big one. More likely to run into moonshiners or weed growers in them woods. :D The P95 is a very reliable, adequately accurate, and very strong auto. You can load up with heavy +P and won't break the gun.

Me, I'd rather tote my .357 or .45 Colt revolver, but this is an auto question. I had a P95 for a while, great gun. I have a P85 now that ain't shabby and a P90 that's awesome. I'm a Ruger P gun fan. Maybe, hopefully, someday, they'll chamber a P90 in 10mm. I keep waiting.

I would also stay away from 147gr... these are great in long barrel submachine guns, but they don't have the velocity to expand well out of a small pistol.
Thats pretty dated information and no longer accurate at all. Just recently I even saw a letter from an engineer at I believe it was Winchester that specifically said they recommended the 147gr round for short barrel 9mm's as the best performer. Go out and take a look at some of the denim covered gel tests for any of the modern 9mm jhp's.

You can theoretically kill a bear with a 9mm maybe. The mailman in "Lucifer's Hammer" did. He emptied a Beretta 92 it in the bear's eye . :D

I know it's just a book, but if I had a bear conrer me in my truck I would try the same thing.
If you don't know what I'm talking about read "Lucifer's Hammer". It is an excellent SHTF book.

You guys are great. Thanks for all the awesome info!

Is there anywhere I can go to find a chart (or official statistics) concerning the most powerful (read "effective") round available for the 9mm?

I guess I'll stay away from bears. I've camped/hiked alone for years and I want to start hiking with my wife and two year old daughter and fear some random bear will come along and ruin the day.
