GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) - A proposed disaster emergency ordinance in Guntersville is causing controversy.

The city council and mayor are considering a new ordinance that gives the city more power.

Mayor Leigh Dollar says it would ensure a quick response in the event of a major disaster, like the April 27, 2011, tornadoes.

But it would also give police officers more power.

The ordinance states officers could disarm individuals, if necessary.

Dollar says the proposal is just way to give officers more authority to protect themselves.

Man there is a wave spreading across this country I just don't get. I'm getting a little pissed.

The aftermath of the April 27,2011 tornadoes were proof that no such ordinance or extra police powers are needed. And NO Alabama in NOT this crazy.

If Colorado can defy federal law, legalize marijuana and get away with it, why can't one town in Alabama defy federal law as well?

I would rather see Colorado granting its citizens MORE freedoms despite the federal governments prohibitionist stance and the universal recognition of the medical benefits of said substance, than see Alabama granting its citizens LESS freedoms despite what the federal government recognizes as personal rights... and taking away rights that are crucial to defending ones self in times of greatest need.

Colorado = more free
small town in Alabama = less free

Bad comparison

Edit: lol, sarcasm is a hard translation on here sometimes

I agree. I guess my sarcasm didn't come across too well.

New Orleans did it, why not Alabama? Thankfully Florida has a law on the state books that does not allow counties or cities or towns to have more restrictive firearms laws than the state.

I hope they have a recall election well underway for this dingbat.
:fire:

There is no recall in Alabama.

Alabama has state pre-emption concerning handguns already and I'll bet this will bring about an all inclusive law once the dust settles. Don't sell Alabama short. Our state motto is "We dare defend our rights" and a movement is already afoot that does just that.

I'll never sell a state short that requires license plates to say Heart of Dixie on them. Just wish it were still bigger :)

There is a big difference between passing a law that violates the constitution and refusing to enforce a law for which power was never granted to the federal government by the constitution or by an amendment to the constitution.

edit... whoops, I didn't get the sarcasm either.

Seriously, what southern cop is going to try and take a good ole boys gun. Some politician is gonna need a real job, soon.

Yep, it won't go over very well, but at the end of the day if this passes that good ole boy could go to jail.

When disaster strikes, that is when law abiding citizens need their guns. To pass laws like this is simply back door gun control.

The antis are feeling very bold indeed these days.

I grew up there...I don't see anything like that holding up. If it does, I suspect that if it is tried during an emergency situation, it's not going to go over real well for one or the other.

I'm curious, how many of the perpetrators of the events that are being used as an excuse to take away our rights were dopers?

More dope, less guns is Colorado's answer?

I'm Libertarian, but will throw everything else under the bus if necessary to save our gun rights!

I'm a cop in north Alabama, not far from the town in question.

I am never going to disarm citizens of their firearms if they are not a criminal threat.

Emergency, Disaster, Plague, Locust Infestation.... People need access to their guns.

Folks in general peacetime have a right to them, too. Carry what you want, just don't go crazy with it.

"We Dare Defend Our Rights"

You're Right

A little?? Something is brewing whether we acknowledge it or not. "Government" is seeing their opportunity to seize as much power as they can get - listen to how arrogant they are, if they had their way they'd tell us when to go to the bathroom. Don't sleep people, please don't put anything past these people.

North Alabama resident here.

In the first day or two of the 5-day power outage (resulting from the storms) there was a radio report about a would-be looter breaking into a store. Bad luck for him, the owner was staying there to guard the property, and the criminal got several bullets in the chest, and expired in the parking lot.

The sheriff's comment was to re-affirm the right of the citizens to protect themselves.

Guess what??

NO MORE LOOTING!!!!!!!

I don't think gun-control schemes have much chance in this state. If Alabama falls to the antis, then I'd say the country has probably been lost by that point!

By the way, I should mention that Alabama lately (my area anyway) has seen a huge influx of people from out of state due mostly to the BRAC (base realignment and closing) process.

I really, really, really hope that all these newcomers are gun friendly. There are enough of them to seriously alter the politics of the state....

I don't think any of them did. Do you even know what dope is?

If you'd throw everything else under the bus then you're not a Libertarian. You're just a serious one-issue voter.
