Is an AR pistol worth the money

They are great for fun. While they can be accurate, they have some serious recoil. I like mine, and doubt I would ever sell it, but they are not your typical "pistol".

I don't really get their usage. Seem kind of heavy/awkward to shoot offhand, really loud, and maybe not all that enjoyable to fire. I don't get how to hold them either? Also seems the 20 and 30 rounders would be hard to handle. Plus there is the recoil tube sticking out.....

I own a Ruger Charger which is a pistol version of the 10/22, and it is a lot of fun, but not really much of a pistol. Great squirrel gun though!
I would try to handle or test fire one before you buy.
 
I toy with the idea from time to time. Now IF it were legal to make a SBR that would be fun to try. (with supresser of course) :) As its not (without more cost/paperwork then I care for) I will pass. IMO the ideal home defense weapon. It won't damage your hearing, shoot thru mild cover/cheap body armor (as that seems to be more common in crimindal) and accurate to a hundred yds. (ok you experts would say 400yds but....)
I would say anyone attempting to attack up my stairs without quality body bunkers,flash bang (or better) against a supressed AR would be looking at a bad day. (If I can't get ears on I will likely be deaf otherwise)
 
PLR-16s, for instance, are nice pistols. Powerful and accurate, and you can load 'em up with big AR magazines and accessories. If you're just going for the gee whiz factor though, I'd suggest a .22LR instead. Like a PLR-22 or, as I think was mentioned, a Ruger Charger.
 
I had an oa-93. Sold it as without the stock it was difficult to control. I did have a one point sling on it that helped with control if it was held taunt. I would say they aren't worth it and it is much better to just sbr a rifle.
 
I was allways under the impression that those "Rifles made pistol" have the sole purpose for a easy start of a SBR project?
you guys actualy use them...?
 
I think I'm fairly safe in saying there are thousands of pistols made on traditionally rifle platforms in the hands of American civilians. That, in my opinion, validates the use of the word "many".
 
they are novelty, i wouldnt expect someone to have one for a really long time
 
IMO, they look stupid. They're the El Camino of the gun world. Is it a truck? Is it a car? I don't know...but it sure looks dumb.

I'll probably get blazed by some car fans for that one.:neener:

That would be a sensible suggestion, but in my opinion anyway, a big part of the "gee whiz" factor of little hand cannons is the deafening blast and 18" fireball.
 
I agree on the El Camino idea. Kind of putting a V-6 in a 3500 Ram vs the Cummins engine or sticking a Cummins in a 1500 and having truck parts blowen over hells 40 acres.
 
With the recoil tube sticking out of it, it's just ugly and pointless. Perhaps a piston operated AR pistol, or as a SBR, has some merit. If you get one, use a 3 point sling to stabilize the thing during operation.
 
I've got a PLR-16, very accurate, little recoil, shares mags with my AR, no buffer tube, and no louder than a 5.56/.223 SBR. We qualify in May and I'm thinking it might replace the 9mm SUB-2000 that I keep in my gear bag.

I agree. Although for different reasons. I always thought they looked cool. El Caminos and Rancheros are second rate trucks, and second rate cars. The worst of both in one package. Same with an AR pistol, or a PGO or AOW shotgun.

Although I'll admit I thought about an AR pistol for a while, but I also had a form 1 in mind. Also looked at a Ranchero, but decided on a station wagon.

The El Camino analogy is a good one. Personally, I'd have no use for an AR pistol. Basically, I think it's just a toy to make noise with--not unlike a gazoo or some such. Okay, it's not quite as useless as a gazoo, but you get my point! :D

You are gravely mistaken. The El Camino could do every thing the Chevelle it based on could do except use the back seat (which was pretty much useless in the Chevelle) and it could carry the same load as a short bed C1500 series pick up. The best of both worlds.

Sure it is --- if you have extra money , why not ??

I own a few 45/70s ---- told my wife they were great protection against BIG bears.

She said " well there ain't no BIG bears in ILLinois " .

So I said -- " RIGHT , see how well the 45/70 works" !!!

LOL

After you buy 10 , 20 etc. etc. firearms --- the OTHERS you buy are mostly "just for the Hell of it ".

This isn't a AR but it is the best $500 gun I bought all year !!!

When the first Clinton AWB was put into place, I found that I wanted an AR pistol in the worst way.
Then when the AWB expired and they were legal again, I found that they were just a bit silly.

When the new AWB goes back into law, I'll probably want one again in the worst way.

Clearly, I'm just a victim of human nature. :evil:
 
I had a Bushmaster AR pistol. It was fun and gathered quite a crowd when I would shoot it. I wound up selling it about 9 months ago. Not sure if it was my particular gun but the thing was a jam-o-matic. I never was able to get through a single mag without some type of mis-feed or jam. I used the same mags that I run in my AR rifles without any issues. Finally had enough and sent it away.
