Is Herter's ammo any good?

I impulsively bought 200 rounds of 62-grain HP Herters in .223 remington for some plinking this weekend in my AR-15, and I figured that as long as clean the <removed> out of my gun, then I shouldn't have any lasting problems am I correct?

And has anyone had experience with the cheap steel cased ammo in general for AR-15's? How reliable is it for plinking? Accuracy at 100 yards?

Herters went out of business in the late sixties or early seventies, but they did have a reputation for quality. I would think the ammo would be fine.

I have never put any through any of my ARs. However, have shot plenty of the Russian made, steel cased ammo (Wolf, Tul-Ammo, Herters, etc., etc.) through my glocks, lower end 1911s, and XD's and the only problem I ran into was a few misfires with the Tul-Ammo (which I reloaded into a magazine and they fired on the second strike). Accuracy is on par with you WWB, UMC, Federal. Some guys tend to think that the steel is hard on extractors, but I have noticed nothing to suggest this (especially with the beefy glock extractor). Its cheap, I say for an every once in a while cheap fix, go for it. Hope this helps.

I have not shot any rifle ammo from Herter's. However Cabela's had a good sale on Herter's .380 acp I think for $9.99 per box of 50. I bought 25-30 boxes while I was there. I have fired approx 15 boxes through my Browning BDA without a single problem. For steel case I have no complaints.

This ammo is similiar to the old "herter's" brand in nothing but name. The "new" herter's ammo is primarily cheap steel-cased russian ammo packaged under the Herter's name for Cabela's. In the most recent Cabelas shooting catalog though, they also introduced a line of "premium" herters ammo that was brass cased, boxer primed, etc,...reminded me a lot of Wolf's "Gold" line in appearence

Shot about 200 rounds through a Mini 14 about a week ago, no problems, not sure about your AR though. If you're looking for cheap brass cased .223, try PMC.

Herters is sold at Cabela's and I think made by wolf. It's steel cased and I have shot some of it and shot ok. Just be sure to inspect it before loading, you should inspect all ammo anyways. This is a round of Herters 62gr fmj that I caught before loading one of my magazines.

Bought 100 rounds---turned my AR into a single shot for 100 rounds.

Might be ok in a bolt action----No go for the AR.

Bought a box of Herters 380 at Cabelas with a discount coupon. Worst crap I ever bought. Tried it through 3 different 380's and had nothing but FTF FTE...
Never again!

I bought a few boxes of Herters 9mm from Cabelas a few months ago, and ran it through my M&P with no problems. It seemed just a little snappier than the WWB though and I did have one bullet which looked like Jeff's photo above. It was also pretty dirty. But not bad for 8.99 a box though.

I've shot about 200 rounds of Herter's and 800 rounds of Tula and Silver Bear in my Rock River. Zero issues so far. Bolt locked back on ever empty magazine, no failures of any sort. Just dirty. But I'm one of those guys that likes cleaning his gun.

Never shot any of the Herter's rifle ammo myself. I have shot it in my brother-in-law's cheap Jiminez .380. It didn't perform any worse than other ammo. Of course, that gun has a failure to feed or failure to extract issue every third or fourth round.

I shot some of their .40S&W through a Kahr with no problems. I ran about 24 or 25 rounds with out a hitch. It was more than a little bit dirty though.

Just ran 150rounds of it through my M&P .40 this weekend and loved it, its steel but I dont reload. So I will be buying it again.
