Is "Herter's" ammo any good? I bought a case of 1000 rnds of 7.62x39 at Cabelas today, and after the $20 coupon and tax it came out to $137.49 or $.137 per round. I don't even own a firearm chambered for this cartridge but at that price I bought it in the event that I will in the near future. Seems like even surplus corrosive 7.62x39 ammo costs more like $.20 per round normally?

holy what the.........

Looks like non corrosive, polymer coated steel case like wolf. Packed in boxes inside of tins for some reason? Very low price.

Yep after some more research it is indeed reboxed steel-cased non-corrosive wolf ammo. Mine wasn't in a tin though. Its 50 twenty round boxes in a big cardboard box...

Now I just need a weapon that will fire this round.

Yes it looks like Cabelas owns the herters name. See what happens when you click this link....

This is the exact ammo I got (122g HP Herters 7.62X39) but its listed at $289.99/1000 on the site! I got it for less than half that after the $20 coupon.

I think I need to go back down and get another box or two on payday before they realize they have it priced so low in the store. I know this is not isolated to my store though, see this link (specifically the last link):

I don't have a link, Larry, but the first merchandise in the new Cabela's 2010 Shooting Catalog is a 2 page Herter's spread advertising .380, 9mm, .40, .45, .223, 7.62x39, .30 Carbine, and .308. They say it is made in Russia, it's all polymer-coated, steel-cased, and either Berdan or Boxer primed depending on the cartridge.

I would suggest that George Leonard Herter must be spinning in his grave, but then I remember how his company peddled "Pepps Spinners" made in Japan, and a host of other knock-offs.

Upon reflection, I suspect that he would be proud, especially if it was touted as world's finest, none better, perfect for cloak & dagger and affairs of state.

That's a great price!

where are you gettting this price the price on the site says over 250 bucks a case. I was ready to fill the ups truck up!!!

Looks to me like you just got a heck of a deal, that should have been for $237.49, and they hit a 1 instead of a 2 on the scanner price.

Knowing that it was error to price it at that level, wouldn't buying more be basically stealing?

Or am I the only one feels that way?

Nope. Every box said $149.99 on it, and its not isolated to just my local Cabelas either. Others are getting the same price elsewhere in the country.

In the Herter's .380 at least, they also have brass cased Berdan primed ammo made in Indonesia.

Stealing? No. Dishonest? Maybe. But the real crime is the dishonesty and theft going on with the markup of the ammunition in the first place. The store is performing a legal transaction, at an agreed upon price. If the error is in their system, then it is their loss. It would be stealing if a customer intentionally mismarked a product in order to purchase it at a reduced price, but if the store mismarked it...then the customer can only be faulted for not buying more at such a price :D

Look at it this way: a gallon of milk costs about $3.35 (near me). If the local Winn Dixie, Piggly Wiggly, Shur Fine, what have you, accidentally marked their milk down to $1.25 a gallon, would you tell them and pay full price, or buy two gallons and take advantage of the store's goof? I'd take two gallons and make pancakes and drink some milk every day :D

Yeah, went back today and they had fixed their mistake. Now priced at $149.99/500 and $274.99/1000.

Guess I was lucky to get the case that I did!!
