I just picked up a Remington 870 Express for informal clay shooting or possibly hunting. It's the 28" bbl with vent rib and adjustable choke tubes. When I was cleaning the gun before I took it shooting, I noticed that there was an area of very rough machining just behind the choke tube (when installed). The area in question is an uneven band of rings that is about 3/8" long and runs parallel to the choke threads for approximately 1/3 of the circumference of the barrel. It doesn't appear to be very deep, but it does snag on some dental picks I use for gun cleaning on occasion. All the other barrels on shotguns I have examined have been very smooth, but none of them were models with adjustable choke tubes. So do I need to get a new barrel or should this not have an effect on the shot pattern?
