Okay, that sounds crazy, but then I have to remind myself you are talking about Australia where after banning almost all private firearms ownership they've now started to put laws on the books making sword and knife ownership illegal.

Sorry mate, but while we can sympathize with your frustration with the wholesale gelding of your country us Yanks don't have any better insight than you do about the legal issues in Oz.

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

I remember the days when Victoria had all the good stuff. We used to drive down there to go shopping

The text of the legislation can be found here...
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_act/cowa1990216/

Regulations of the act are here...
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_reg/cowr2000325/

The regulations (schedule 2 (46)) simply say
'The martial arts weapon known as a "Tonfa" '
Unfortunately this doesn't answer your question at all, although you would have to assume that if a reputable martial arts store there sells a foam training version then that is not illegal.

You might be better off to contact the victorian police via the contact details on their "weapon identification page" here...

Note that the Control of Weapons Act 1990 (Vic) section 8b allows for exemptions. I don't know about Victoria, but in NSW, exemptions are fairly easy to get (although you must provide a good reason - ie martial arts training).

Final advice to deanc = Never trust free advice you get from the internet from someone you don't know !!

I must disagree with HSO who thinks that almost all private firearms ownership here is banned. You obviously haven't seen the collections of the guys I shoot with - but you are correct - Australia is not the same country as the US and our laws and constitution are different. We Aussie shooters are all bush lawyers now.

Yeah, it's not all banned. It's just very, very heavily regulated. A lot of weapons that are available in the USA are banned here, and the requirements to obtain otherwise normal firearms are just absurd.

Unsure what your regulations are in Victoria, but good advice was given to call the local police and ask them. I would not identify myself, just state that you have a question regarding PRACTICE equipment. If they start asking too many intruding questions simply hang up and start thinking about getting rid of the tonfas.

I found out they are leagal thanx evryone. One thing i cant stand is the peopel who use these wepons for the wrong things and stuff like that they ruine it for peopel like you and me :fire:
