Tonfa/PR-24 Info?

Hey again.

I just got my hands on a PR-24 side handled baton. I have always wanted to learn to use one just for the sake of a well rounded weapons knowledge. I have quite a bit of experience with the 50" staff as well as escrima sticks, but I know only the basics of how to use tonfa style batons.

Can any of you suggest any reading material that might help me in my quest to gain proper experience with this weapon?

I have a fair amount of experience in tae kwon do, so I've been exposed to a fair number of weapons. A small bit of tonfa among them. Tonfa doesn't make a great deal of sense to me, unless you are in the situation from whence it arose. Namely, needing to disguise a weapon as a farm implement (lever arm for a grindstond). If you aren't under the restriction (hopefully a safe assumption), I would personally prefer something along the lines of a telescoping baton. This would combine well with your knowledge of escrima.
Here is a TERRIBLE website (from a design point of view) with the most god awful music playing in the background, but I think there is some useful info on tonfa there. If you have to use a tonfa, good luck. If you aren't required to use one, I think another weapon (especially baton-type) would be easier to find instruction for and ultimately more practical. My $2*10^-2...

The PR-24 is an awesome grey area weapon. I took a class on it way back when and don't have any literature on it anymore, but I'll tell you its worth it to look for. Even one who's only half @ssed with one will do very much damage in very short order, and one who is versed in one will (can) kill you in short order. I still have mine and work out with it occassionally.

Wrist Drags
Running arm Lock

And you may come up with something. I've chased a few punks away with mine. I've sent one man to the hospital with one, and I am admittidly half @ssed with it!!

Good, good weapon. It was taught to take no head shots with them b/c you can kill so easily with it but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.

I realive that all of the collapsible batons are easier to carry but I really think that a tonfa type is much more versatile in use.

Just an aside; When I learned the PR-24, I always thought it was funny the Monadnock people called it the Georgia State Police takedown. There's no such thing as the Georgia State Police. It's the Georgia State Patrol. Almost went to work for them, once upon a time...

I was a straight stick and PR-24 instructor. If you practice with it the PR-24 can be a very effective weapon. When I would get in the red man most people were unable to hit me with and it wasn’t because I floated like a butterfly. It’s definitely something that you need to keep on top of. Also I learned through bruised ribs that jabs hurt far more then hits. I would tell people try to stick that thing through me like it was a spear or think of a shovel and you are digging for gold.
