Hello all,

I felt compelled to ask after hearing again and again of “best caliber to use?” “best manufacture?” “What to shoot a bad guy with? Rifle? Handgun? Shotgun?” “Well you never shoot if”…….. Does anyone have certain measures set in place at their home, before a break in? Do you purchase commercial grade locks? Barred windows? Razor wire and prison alarms? Just wondering if anyone has made their home a fortress to try and break into…

Thanks in advance..

I have AK's, AR's, shot-guns, thousands of rounds of ammo and all I have ready to go at any time is the 32 ACP I carry.

Works for me...

I do have some spring loaded deadbolts and when leaving hastily, I left the keys on the table. Yes, I did have to break something to get in the house. I just picked the cheapest thing to fix.

You forgot the best alarm on earth, an alarm dog.
Also serves as a magnet for police bullets. Gun under pillow. Gun under mattress.
Razor wire
Now there's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Anything that trips someone and makes noise is as good as a dog, plus you don't have to feed it.

Schofield, I think you make a very good point. I'd like very much to be able to "fortify" the place I live, but for myself and many members of this board, we're limited in what we can because we live in apartments. That said, there are still the "door hanger" alarms, dogs (as allowed), and the old "chair under the door handle" trick. I do look forward to one day owning a home I can modify as I see fit. Right now, I do have a perfectly good substitute though - 4 of us under the roof, with revolving schedules. Someone's awake most of the time.

Psyopspec, I appreciate the reply, and I actually live at an apartment now but am looking at moving into our first house in February. So I’m always looking at what physical security features I can employ and improve upon. That does make for a secure living arrangement having 4 different schedules :D

I live in an apartment now, but with two rather aggressive alarm dogs.

I do have dreams of concrete walls and solid steel doors, though. Someday...

Yeah, I got them alarm dogs.

And then the BG's gotta get through the Missus, afore they get to me, cause she sleeps closest to the door.

I love being protected.

I got a rubber band gun in case they get past her, and if they ain't careful, I'll holler like anything!:neener::neener::neener:

My home is my castle and it WAS my castle long before former V.P. Agnew used the term!

Here were my castles:

USN Bride's beach cottage circa Vietnam era.

Land and house that we built and lived in for 30 some years. Former state/late husband.

My former Coleman pop up cabin! ; . )

My former tiny log cabin rental way UP in the mountains.

My place here in 'town' until a cabin gets built.

Queen Catherine aka Lady C sometimes.
Ha!

Hey, I've got ADT, what more do I need? ;)

Steel doors with no glass in them, good locks & deadbolts (lil bro's a locksmith). Two security lights (street lights) on power poles, one at each end of the house. Fenced on 3 sides, pond & ditch limit access at front - ditch is not so deep as to provide good cover. Lawn cut at 3", no shrubs, tree limbs cut to minimum 6' above ground level. Windows are approx. 6' above ground level. No dog yet; still looking, just haven't found the right one. Minimum unobstructed line-of-sight approx. 100' to fence line.

Unobstructed line-of-sight (400' or so) to neighbor's (retired LEO) front door. He does have a few dogs that look out for our place too.

Other neighbors are farther away, but we all look out for each other.

Razor wire and land mines might be frowned on in some locales. Way I understand it, most any type of booby-trap is not legal. Too bad, 'cause both of my brothers are pretty inventive. :)

I'm in an apartment complex, so all of that stuff is quite tough to do. I just make sure that the door is locked and bolted whenever I go out. College towns typically have a high rate of break-ins.

I'm still filling the moat, dragons on order...... :D

I have done the things I could do..longer screws in doors/hinges/frames kick-resist plates around locksets, 'hurricane film' on windows, X-10 motion detectors/vid-cams

Yes!!
I have lived in the same home for over 28 years and the neighborhood has gone down in the last ten years or so.
Way down actually.:uhoh:
Dog is the house as i speak (Blue Heeler that is very aggresive with people she does not know well, hence my handle "heeler")and all doors and windows have burglar bars which is pretty common in Houston.
Alarm stickers are on every window and every entry door.
Bolted down ten gauge gun safe with a 1/4 inch plate steel door.
12 gauge Shotgun with high base # 6 with in easy reach of my bed.

Yes.

I am actually one that HAS razor wire as a barrier.

But I live in a very unique situation that serves my purposes well.

Yes, the mindset and preparation go before guns. It doesn't even have to be concrete walls and razor wire, it can start with something as simple as locking your doors, closing your gate, etc.

I have posted this before but this seems like a good time to bring it up.

DETERRENCE.

The best way to deal with intruders is to deter them. Unless you are big time in the drug trade and tend to rip off other dealers, it is very unlikely that a paramilitary death squad is coming to your house to get you.
It is far more likely that you may confront a burglar who did not think anyone was home.
Thieves are lazy by nature. They want something for nothing or at least as little effort as possible. If you take just a few common sense precautions and make your home more difficult to rob than the neighbors, the thief will move on to an easier target. One of the absolute best deterrents will cost you about two dollars. Buy one of those metal "BEWARE OF DOG" signs and post it prominently where it can be seen from the street. It doesn't even matter if you have a dog or not. A thief casing the neighborhood will see that and dismiss your house and find something easier.
