ithaca 37

hi i'm jerry and i'm new here . i love shotguns! i have a few nice ones and i too recently got the "old" model 37 bug. this seems like a great site. i was wondering what the dob was for my new gun i think 1960? serial # is 760404 thanks to all . i have the following shotguns . im not bragging. i just love shotguns

benelli sbe
flues ithaca 12 sxs
ithaca 37 12
ithaca 37 deerslayer 2 12
rem wingmaster 870 12
rem 11-87 12
rem 1100 20
stevens single 410
french made 12 custom double
i want an ithaca 51 and a mag 10 and abrowning a-5 and a winchester model 12 16 ga. then i guess ill be good for a while none of these are high dollar guns but i like them anyhow. the personal history and stories behind each gun makes them all valueable to me . thanks for letting me go on a tangent .:)

Thanks in advance Talon

My first post here, thanks for letting me in.

I thought I would also post an image. I am wondering what year my Model 37R was born. The serial number is 557760-2 and it says 16 GA Featherlight 2 3/4 MOD
It also is odd I don't find many ribbed ones that are not vented ribs like mine.
I guess thats what the R means in 37R if it were vented it would have VR instead. My firearms book does not list an R model.

She has smooth as silk action with pretty much blue loss on reciever but the rest is nice with just a few freckles but not what I would call rust. No cracks in wood but a few dings and spots of finish loss. The barrel is shiny as a baby's behind.

Also, I wonder if I can put a rifle slug through this?

EDITED
saw this in another post.
My 2 cents: Please don't "x" out the digits of the serial number. It really doesn't do anything to help you.

Saw this so I decided it is OK for me to post the numbers, I have my receipts and transfer papers so it's mine, I guess theres nothing to worry about.

Anyone know a good reference book for Model 37 Ithaca's 16, 20, 12 gauges?

i.e. finding dates for serial numbers, etc.?

Any help would be appreciated maybe a link to buy the book or a ISBN#

Many thanks,
Steve

Your 37R was built in 1954.

I would limit yourself to shooting the standard "Forster" type of rifled slug through it and you should be just fine.

interested in the date on my model 37

Hi
New to the forum !
I am interested in the date on my model 37 20 gauge 2 3/4 full choke :serial #131908

I have owned this gun since 1965 I added a Broadway rib back in the late 70's and used it to shoot skeet.

I love the HD squeeze and pump feature of my old model 37 ;)

Thanks
shillelaghs

Thank you Talon for that info on my 37R.
Call me a dummy ( You're a dummy Sig! ) but I do not know for sure what a Forster type slug is. When I look down my shiny barrel, it does have a swirl to it but not what I call rifling. Just a shiny swirl going round and round on the surface.
So is this "Forster Type" just a typical "punkin ball" as I always called slugs or are they something different? I think I know what sabots are. Thanks again, sorry to bother.

Right slug

Thanks for that informative link. I have the correct Fedreral Hollow Point Hi-Shok Slugs for my 16 as they are round nose gumdrop shaped with rifle grooves on the flat sides and are made of lead and are 4/5 oz just like they are supposed to be.

I did however find I had a box of Remington Copper Sabot Slugs in the safe for my 20 gauge single shot which I sure am glad I did not try to use before getting this information. I might get away with it but it is probably not a good idea at all.

I guess I'll be selling a few different boxes of shotgun shells on a popular auction site soon.

Was that a dig? LOL
Where did I put my keys last night?

I for one am very glad for Talons reply on my 37 age and the info on the slugs from him and Grayrock. I really do appreciate it.

How about one more Model 37 12 gauge serial 371723994 Year?

Also I've looked around the Ithaca sight am I looking in the wrong area to find serial number production years, information, etc? or is this information in a reference book?

Many thanks,
Steve

This is a fantastic forum. :)
OK I have a question of course. My SN is 371709XXX I'd like to know when it was made. I know it is not a real old model, just wondering.
Years ago when I called Ithaca for some new wood they asked for the SN.
So I told them and the girl said OH!! you have a military or law enforcement version or something like that, I don't remember exactly.
But what does make this M37 different is it is nickle plated. No parts are blued.
Can anyone supply more info on this version?
I thank you all in advance.

Yes- you are looking in the wrong place. It is in Black Talon's reference book. From perusing this thread, it seems he has the only copy in existance- no fair- all of his post count is coming from this one thread!!:neener:

Yeah, but it cost me $90 to buy that list. I don't think the "PC+++" here at THR is worth the $90. :)

Edit: Oh, and it's not "all" my post count, it's only about 40-50%. :D

Your gun is a 1981 "M&P". The nickle-plate was an optional factory finish at that time. They were not limited to LE sales, but were available to any Ithaca dealer. We sold lots of them in the gunshop that I was working at. They were also made in blue steel and hard-chrome as well.

I thank you very much, that is about what I figured, but it makes me feel better coming from you!!!!!!!!!
Just want to be sure what "M&P" means. I'm thiking Military & Police.
And the fact it has a full length barrel mag for 8 rounds vs the 5 rnd version ?
My best to the best.........
Dan
