And I suspect that nobody wanted to be the first to "chicken out". It might seem unmanly.
The instructors might have counted on this concept when the briefing began.

Have the lawyers for the instructors heard about this crazy scheme?
 
In another of Yeager's classes students were told they must not "pamper" their precious cutom guns and were told they must throw it down on the gravel and step on it at the beginning of the class. The Instructor threw his gun down and stepped on it and IT WENT OFF and put a round through one of the student's truck tire. Yeager eventually agreed to replace the tire but defended the Instructor. These people are not running on all 8 cylinders. Be very careful who you choose to "learn" from.
