January/February postal match

22 degrees and 35-40mph winds. No shotting for me today. Nearly had a wreck on the way home because the icy roads and the wind blew the car passing me sideways. But I’ll get out there soon!

"2 targets per shooter, per class, per month. You may enter both classes. Winner at the end of February."

Looks like I can enter one more time in January this weekend is suppose to get nice a cold front coming in tomorrow gonna try to get out this weekend. Think I'll try a different rifle other than a AR though.

Actually I think I'm prefering SR-1 rules compared to paper plate, count up the score and that's it instead of measuring groups.

I agree. It would be harder to measure groups I think. I just printed off 20 targets and now I'm set for awhile. I'll have to go out again and try to dethrone you, though it ain't getting much warmer here haha

I started with a Mini-14, figured it was in the spirit of the competition. Forgot that I never put proper width sling mounts on it, so I couldn't use a proper sling. I jury- rigged my shooting bag carry handle into a poor excuse for one. I count a 90-1x for the Mini 14.

Oh, and don't stand beside a person shooting a Mini. Never have seen this happen before, but funny anyway.
IMG_20190126_122800.jpg

Next up I shot the James River M14. This has a good sling, and it pulled in a 96-2x
IMG_20190126_132141.jpg

I shot 2x5 rounds through both to verify zero, Then shot these prone on a nice fluffy carpet. I'll bring out a Garand and AR next month to see If I can improve both the 30 caliber and poodle shooter scores.

Went out and shot today. Best score is a somewhat sad 94. No X. All in the black though!

I got a pretty decent group on my first try, but it was low. I only gained one point when I adjusted my sights, and shot it again. I was getting fatigued, that's my only excuse. The rifle does fine!

Don't have rifle pics, sorry. Can't get my phone to talk to the internet like I want. I'll get them up soon...

55 grain American Eagle FMJ.

It's a bull barrel, "free floated" 20 incher on a lower with UTG components. Trigger isn't fantastic, but it isn't mil-spec either. I think the bottom of the gas block just touches the handguard, because my sight-in with my bipod made my first "official" target low. I think I'm going to do the same gun with different ammo next month. Maybe even next week!

I think I'm in the sporter category. Yes, it is a bit of a heavy barrel for a "walking varmint" gun, but I lugged it for more than a mile and a half today, so I'm claiming "Walking varminter"! Shot prone unsupported, with an old sling (just a carrying sling, jury rigged for support). It isn't the biggest bull barrel out there, can't remember what the diameter is though.

Did post both targets, 'cause I was embarrassed about my group size... ;)

This is the very first time I've ever done ANY kind of rifle competition! I was happy to get everything in the black. Would have liked to get at least one lucky "X", but oh well. Try again next time.

Back from AZ for a week. Looks like sub-zero weather and likely work shutdown for the week, so I'll try and put up some scores from the Finnish front, so long as the crew is up for me shooting my own match. That M14 score will be a tough one, might have to use the swede. Glad you folks are enjoying it.

go for it - the more competition the better.....

Too cold/snow-covered here for these old bones. I'll try to catch up in the spring.

Got a pic of my rifle...

The bipod is a Harris, but I did take it off for the shoot. This is a link to the upper, or at least one VERY similar. I got it a couple of years ago, but it looks the same.

Like I said. Walking varminter.

If I've got a carbine upper with iron sights and an M4 profile barrel would that qualify for the other division even though I've got a free-float handguard? Same lower.

Thanks in advance, cuz I ai'nt gonna do it!
Almost 40 below here this A.M.

when I shot it was 18 above, with snow blowing in my face - could hardly see the sights - or the targets.
did so poorly I'm ashamed to send them in.... :(

I only had time for one attempt this weekend using M1 carbine. My range has stone benches that can't be moved and only two wood benches that can be moved to get off the bench shooting and people occupied the wood ones most of the day. Scored a 77 with the carbine in sitting position.

Holy smokes I hardly get groups like that from my M1A using a front rest on a bench, gonna have to try some of that Federal ammo out in mine.

Primers from the factory ammo. (Fed GMM with 105 Berger Hybrids) Federal Premium Gold Medal Berger 105 Gr Hybrid OTM Primers - Shot in Havak - THR Size.JPG

Look as I would expect.

I ordered some more of the Federal and some Hornady 108 Gr ELD. It might like one better, who knows. I did not bring the chrono the other day, so I need to the next time out. I now see the benefit of where the MagnetoSpeed unit would be handy for getting the best idea of actual muzzle velocity. I have a Pro Chrono Digital and will be getting velocities at 5 yards. How much do loads like these tend to lose from the muzzle to 5 yards? I'll put the MagnetoSpeed on my would like to/be nice to have someday list.

Weather here is getting nasty again, possible sleet, even snow, which locks us down and causes issues for us at work. The South just doesn't handle snow well, and so much stuff is prone to freezing in sub 30s weather if it stays long because it just isn't designed for it.

That said, when the weather cooperates, the gun is clean and ready to go again. Bore was nice and smooth running patches through. I am at 20 rounds with the barrel having been cleaned three times. No, I don't do the one and clean. I casually cleaned at 5, 10, and 20. Not much fouling, practically no copper, a credit to the barrel. I have ordered a longer (44") cleaning rod, as mine was just barely long enough, and if the handle clears the stock it would be better. I still have some "Watson" 6MM brushes from back in the day (Had bought 10 packs (IIRC) shortly before my last BR match.) Would buy them from Ed at matches. Super nice fellow.

Walkalong, I think that you mistakenly posted this in the wrong thread, but I'll throw in my $0.02 anyway. The JBM Ballistics program asks for the distance to the chronograph in the input panel, and corrects the entered velocity to the muzzle in the output. It might not be exact but won't be too far off. 8.5 fps for a 180 gr. 30 cal bullet. YMMV.

Well, I said I'd give a report from the Finnish Front, and so I shall. Took advantage of severe cold and winds to infiltrate behind Soviet lines. Was just warm enough to get them out of their bunkers for a bit of scouting today. Left ski tracks across a patrol route, then doubled back on my trail to some spruce trees and waited in ambush at 100m from behind a curtain of upturned roots. They should have stayed in the bunker and faced the Komisar's Tokarev. That's how we used to write up "after actions" in our military matches on SR.com. Added a bit of fun to getting out and shooting these historic weapons.

Did better than I thought I would, but not as well as I could have, luckily for the group. Did some winter component cleanup and slapped together a load with 108 Barnes Frangible, 51 IMR 4064 and some well used Serbian brass destined for the scrap heap. Couldn't get a proper zero, had to hold above the black with the sight set at 300m. Not conducive to precision. The rifle liked the load though, need to tweak the zero and charge, see if I can get it to land on an even yardage notch. Ran 96-2x, prone in the snow. Sling was too short for the heavy coat I had on, but the 6" of dry, grainy snow made a pretty solid position. Working on pictures. -9F air temp at time of shooting. Rifle is a '43VKT M39 in 7,62x54R. Never thought about a tie. Right now Maxxhavoc is in the lead with more 10's. I think his m14 is class 1, not national match.

Think I'm gonna have to try prone position next.
Definitely the most stable position. It was a dry cold, so I just sprawled out in the soft snow today. Typically you'll want to bring some sort of mat such as a foam camping pad or some old carpet as most ranges aren't very prone friendly. If you plan on doing more of this type of shooting, a proper shooting mat would be a good investment, but please get a good sling first. I shot off a $10 Wal Mart camping pad for years. There are also a couple of tactical cases that fold out into a shooting mat on the market, but they are not NRA/CMP legal (although depending on the match, nobody may care). Just FYI, the 2 96 scores up are about on par with what you'd have to shoot slow fire prone to win a very competitive CMP vintage or modern military match if your offhand and rapid scores were up as well, and would get you well into the silver cut scores, flirting with gold. We're giving you a high bar, but you can get there!

greetings

I'm a bit embarrassed to post this, but oh well
class 1: Romanian SKS, iron sights, no sling
TulAmmo124 gr SP - first time I ever shot this one
apparently not a good choice
about 18 deg, snow blowing in my face
elbows on bench
