Improvements Enhance Background-Check System

A 10-year status report from the FBI shows that improvements made to the
National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) have been working
effectively in preventing felons and other dangerous individuals from
buying guns, the Criminal Justice Newsletter reported June 16.

According to the report, a $400-million grant from the National Criminal
History Improvement Program (NCHIP) has improved state and local
criminal-history records and other databases used in the background
checks.

The report found that the NICS was able to provide immediate
background-check responses to gun dealers 91 percent of the time, up from
71 percent in 2001.

System improvements have also reduced the number of retrievals, which are
conducted when the FBI finds out after the purchase that an individual is
ineligible to have a firearm. According to the report, retrievals declined
from 5,056 cases in 2000 to 3,429 cases in 2002.

"The improvements in the NICS system are helping make our country safer by
barring access to firearms by felons, illegal aliens, and others who
cannot legally own guns," said Attorney General John Ashcroft.

If it's supposed to be a background check on the prospective buyer, why does the federal government want to know the make, model, barrel length, caliber, and serial number of the inanimate object being purchased?

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid

"The improvements in the NICS system are helping make our country safer by barring access to firearms by felons, illegal aliens, and others who cannot legally own guns," said Attorney General John Ashcroft.
How much wronger can he be.:fire:
They can go to almost ANY street corner in the inner city and get one with no waiting period, no identifacation and little money.:scrutiny:
Do they really think it even sounds good?

Desertdog, I knew someone was going to see that, that's why I said "remeber it was the NRA that forced this Bullchit on us, knowing it could be misused...
whats that saying, don't judge possible legislation by what good it might do , but by how it might be misused............ that's way off, but it's the jist....... close enuff fer guvmint work1! :)

When did the Feds start asking for that? I did a background check 10 minutes ago and didnt have to give that to the operator..

Bbrins: But its not told to the NICS person, the only thing they know about the gun is 'long arm' or 'pistol', IIRC.

The last three firearms I purchased, I heard the dealer on the phone with NICS give the make, model and serial number, at three different places, over a 2 year period.

Tell me my guns are not registered.

fact is they do not need to know WHAt guns you have , just WHO has them, The NICS IS registration and permission slips IS backdoor registration..... That's why I , personally, dislike BOTH!
:cuss: :fire: :barf:

The nics people have a script to follow and specific info isn't on it. The only thing they are allowed to ask is long gun or hand gun. If more is being told, the nics operator is new, stupid, or going to be fired once their supervisor finds out. Unfortunetly, if you get on the phone to correct them, they are trained to hang up. The make, model and such is on the form if you do a crime, they know you did a check, and all checks must be stored for 20 years after which they can be destroyed. I don't remember if any info on what the nics people are allowed to take is on the back of the 4473, but you might glance over it next time you buy.

I would like to know out of those 3,429 criminals that tried to get firearms. How many did the Fed's go after trying to break the law?? Also out of those 3,429 how many were done incorrectly (Misspelling of names, similar names, ect)

The dealer fills in all of that information, it's on the back of the form.

Wow really? You mean on that box of thosands of forms that no on ever looks at, unless some gun is stolen or used in a crime?

I would submit that since 1968 all firearms purchases through FL dealers are registered even if not yet in a centralized computer.
