July Rimfire Match:

Thanks for getting us started, Jim! That's some fine shooting. Hope you're wrong about getting another chance to better your score, I think those XTPs would put you in the white on all 25. All the Savages that I have fired, including my own, (as well as most other .17HMRs) seem to do much better with the "heavies".

:)

Jim: wow that's impressive, nice shooting! I fear that me and my 'lowly' marlin 22 may be an embarrassment this month compared to the likes of shooting like that lol. still can't wait to go give it a try.

Ah, remember, I'm in the Unlimited class, shooting from the bipod so your Marlin has just as good a chance for taking the Sporting class. I used to have a cheap Marlin Glenfield (model 60) that my wife bought me for $49.95 when Walmart first opened in the town we were living in at the time. Just for giggles, I put a huge 8-24 X 50 scope on it. One day when there was actually no Kansas wind, a friend and I were LITERALLY driving those big headed upholstery tacks into a 4 X 4 target frame post at 75 yards. One of the dumbest things I have done was sell it to a friend of mine. Now, he won't let me buy it back -

Shot one of these today and I did not do very well at all. Shot 10 of 25 with my 597 .17hmr. Pretty hot and miserable though b/c I got a late start. Going to try and get an earlier start and give it another go.

WOW I want to see how someone does with this from the sporting class no rest.

Is it considered a rest if I shoot from the bench using a sling and elbow on the bench?

Nope, you can even use a pair of shooting sticks if you like, just no bipods or formal rests allowed in the sporting class.

:)

No, 15yds. is for irons and non-magnified optics only. Both magnified divisions are from 50yds. I figured that 15 would make target acquisition a bit easier for those with poor vision (like myself).

:)

The best I could do today

when it gets a little cooler or I get an earlier start maybe I can do a little better.

Class -- Unlimited
Savage TR MkII -- Detailed Range Review of this Savage MKII
Nikon P-22 Rimfire Scope 2-7x32 (First time shooting with it today)
Bipod No rear shooting bag just my hand and shoulder
Ammo Wolf Match Target
Sad Score = 15 out of 25

I thought for sure I would do a lot better even though I knew it was going to be challenging, but doing it in this heat takes it to a different level.

I am not giving up just yet I will get another chance to shoot it again before the month is out.

Kudos for coming up with the challenge.

LOL I even had a towel I dunked in my cooler full of ice and wrapped it around my neck and still couldn't stay cool. This challenge looked so difficult I just couldn't wait until next week when the temp is supposed to be back to normal.

Class: Sport
Rifle: 10/22
Scope: Leupold 2-7 set at 7x
Ammo: CCI Standard Velocity
Position: Prone with sling
Tacks: 19

I did a lot better than I expected. Almost no wind and temps in the low 80s. Of the 5 I shot this morning the next best was a 14, got lucky with where the shots fell in my wobble with this one. Fun target :)

Welcome Mitch. I'd call that pretty darn good for a stock rifle sporting a 7x scope.

BTW, I envy your weather...I could go for a few 80 degree days.

:)

Once again I am having issues and cant print PFD files. Can someone post it on the forum differently?
Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have any other copies of the target as I didn't make this one, but I'll try to open it in Photoshop and see if I can save it as a JPEG (I think that'll work) this afternoon.

:)

Got the target in JPG for you Mav -- Orlando, scale this JPG file to print exactly on an 8.5 X 11 sheet and it'll be the right size for you.

Jim

That rifle is definitely better than I have any right to expect. Bought it for an Appleseed with the intention of rebuilding it after but as good as it shoots I'm afraid to do anything to it.

Jim, thank you for adding the JPEG. That should fix him up. xyxthumbs.gif

Mitch, there's no harm in switching up a 10/22. The beauty of the design is it's ease of modification and, if you end up not liking the new iteration, returning it to OEM configuration. I've swapped the stock on mine three times and went through 4 barrels (one chambered for .17HM2) before settling on what I have now (Fajen Legacy Adjustable stock with a Tac. Sol. bbl). I think I have this one pretty much where I want it, but I have thought about starting a new one for a WA-2000 build (but $1k for a stock is a bit ridiculous). Additionally, there is no harm in upgrading the small action parts like the trigger group, extractor, magazine release, and BHO release.

:)

Throwing this out there to see what yall think. I didn't let my OCD go crazy with making all the Red circles perfect and actually varied them a little intentionally to see what would contrast better. Hope I'm not "shooting myself in the foot" by putting this possible advantage out there but figured I would do "the high road" thing.

Let me know what you think, and if you think it makes any improvement.

I'm going to hopefully get out to the range early tomorrow morning (well early for me) and shoot this one before it gets windy and before I have to leave for work on Thursday as I will be gone through the rest of this month.

Looks like there has been some great shooting so far on this and I look forward to seeing what I can do.

Edit: P.S. Credit and many thanks to Jim for the original JPEG, hope you don't mind my experimenting with it!

Looks good to me. I haven't looked at it at 15/50yds, but I think it can help, particularly if you are shooting non-magnified.

:)

So far I've shot a few of these but I can't get a bead on this one. Best so far is 9 of 25. Rem 597 17hmr, 17gr hornady, 85ishF, 1000000% humidity(rained for about the first 30 min I was at the range).

Finally got a .22 rifle I can use in the Sporting class. Found a brand new Ruger 10-22 at Wally World for $227 + tax. Best price I've seen on the stock 10-22 carbine lately so I grabbed it. Probably gonna put at least a Volquartsen trigger in it as the stock one runs about 6 pounds. I did stone it a little and got it down to 4.5 but I don't want to make it any lighter until after I get a chance to shoot it.
I swiped the 3-9 X 50 scope off my Stoeger air gun. The air gun is a break barrel and the scope is mounted on the receiver so it doesn't hold zero very well anyway. Not sure who made the scope, but it has a really bright image even at 9 power and a parallax adjustable objective that focuses from about 5 yards to infinity. Way more than an air gun needs anyway. The turrets are 1/4" per click at 100 yards! I think that glass will work much better on the 10-22.

I can zero it on the 25 yard pistol range while the rifle range is being refurbed, just won't be able to shoot it in the match this month.

Nice rifle, Jim. I think you'll end up find some excuse for doing more than replacing the trigger group (I highly recommend a auto-release BHO), but they are pretty decent rifles either way. Hate to hear that you can't squeak it in this month, but you could always run the target to 15 and go for it with the irons.

:)

No way; I thought that they would never add that simple little upgrade...only took them, what, 50 years?

:)
