Okay, so my state is now an "open carry" state. I'm not a fan of open carry my own self, but I consider the law really to be just more leeway for "discreet carry" - IWB or even OWB with a cover garment, and if the wind exposes your weapon or you sit down the wrong way eating tacos, no big deal.

So... when the 642 in the pocket or the Charter Bulldog IWB just isn't the fashion statement one wants to make, which Ruger Single-Action is, carried OWB? A Bearcat, a Super Blackhawk Bisley .44 Magnum (well, maybe not really but we might as well consider the extreme example, right?)?

Or maybe some other Ruger SA in between?

What do you guys think? Tell me something that will really impress my FIL when I show up for Christmas properly dressed.

TIA!

How about an early model Flattop Blackhawk in .44 Magnum? Sure to be noticed at any family gathering.

I have a U.S. Firearms Sheriff's model in 45 colt that I like a lot. A 3" barrel with a leather rig from "El Paso Saddlery" is fast to draw even in the winter when under my farm chore coat. I also like the Ruger Montado in 45 Colt . They both weigh about 34 oz and a joy to carry and shoot. When out and about riding my mule around the farm etc, it gives me great comfort to carry one of these. If you like single actions, then you will really enjoy one. Good luck in your search and have fun.

If you really want to carry a SA revolver you will need a good holster made to carry that revolver concealed! Dillon is carrying a SA revolver concealed-carry holster made by Mernickle. Look Here: I have seen this holster and it really does help conceal a full size SA revolver and is amazing with a smaller short barrel SA revolver with a Birdshead grip frame. :D

.357 Mag. or .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk with the 4 5/8" barrel. If you get a .45 convertible you can shoot .45 ACP, which has a far greater selection of modern bullets available, in it.

I know several in this farm community where I live who sometimes carry a SA, including me. The Rugers are a good gun but much too heavy for daily carry even with a hip holster. I think you should give serious thought to a light weight Sheriff's model in 45 Colt with a 2.5-3" barrel weighing about 30 oz. I have two and they fit nice "in-the-waist" band for conceal carry and quick for the draw too. I carry mine, like others around here, into town that way. Look at U.S. firearms Rodeo Sheriff's , a plain model that is slick and light to carry. Just a thought. Snoop

Ruger Lipsey Bisley 3.75" 44 magnum SS SA loaded with quality SD 44 specials. Dennis

What is it with you people? Everyone ignored this revolver since August, when it came out. Now Jeff Quinn's doing a review, and it's getting trumpeted on the boards.

I had to wait for two months for Lipsey's to get more in. If it wasn't winging it's way 2nd Day to my dealer right now, I'd be PO'd at the extra publicity.

Ixnay on the Ipseyslay!

I've been carrying and shooting SA revolvers for over 30 years. I have a Colt SAA 2nd Generation and a custom Colt Bisley - both are great guns, but a little big with the 5.5 inch barrels. I have an El Paso Saddlery "Crosshair" holster that is a high ride style that conceals these big guns rather well and they do carry good in it.

Guess, I'm starting to show my age, smaller and lighter works best for me. I have had a Cimarron Lightning in .38 Special with the 3.5 inch barrel for about 12 years. Carries great and is very accurate. This is my go-to SA for down on the farm or taking walks in the woods. The Cimarron birds head grip (although SA) will make you take a second look, to make sure your not looking at a vintage DA Colt. It is about 20% smaller than the full size SAA.

If all you want to do is impress your FIL, show up with this hooked to the back of your truck. Then get ready for show and tell. :D

PRM , +1 on the Cimarron "Lightning" in 38 sp. I bought one for my wife and had the barrel cut down to 2" for a light weight Sheriff's gun and it is a dandy little gun to carry At 27 oz.

MikeJackmin, I have one just like yours except with a 2.5" barrel and without the ejector in 45 Colt. It is fast and smooth on the draw from the waist band. It is called the birdshead sheriff.

Virtually any Colt SAA or replica at 4¾" or less can be carried concealed rather easily. If I were buying one just for the purpose, it would probably be one of the downsized SAA's from Uberti in .38Spl or .41Colt. Or perhaps a Sheriff's model SAA in .45ACP.
