Justice officials in "Panic Mode" over failed Gun Program

The FBI informant who was buying the guns for the cartels was actually an undercover DEA agent, reports CBS News' Sharyl Attkisson.

According to Grassley and Issa, if the DEA and FBI had shared information with ATF, "then Operation Fast and Furious may have ended as many as ten months sooner than it did. This would have prevented hundreds of assault-type weapons from being illegally straw purchased on behalf of Mexican drug cartels."

The letter outlines an amazing alleged failure of DEA and FBI to share crucial investigative information with ATF.

It says while ATF was trying to identify the unnamed financier behind a gun trafficking ring leader named Manuel Celis-Acosta, the DEA and FBI already knew who the financier was - and had in fact turned him into a confidential informant. Yet, the letter states, the financier was allowed to continue to purchase weapons from Acosta over the course of a year, without ATF ever knowing that the man they were seeking to identify... was a government informant.

The letter also states that prior to becoming a confidential informant, the financier may have used $3,500 in taxpayer money, "official law enforcement funds," to finance weapons trafficking. He allegedly received the money - not knowing it came from the U.S. government -- by selling narcotics to another government confidential informant.

The Justice Department had no immediate comment.

Who should be coordinating the activities of these agencies again? Eric Holder, who knew nothing about what his various agencies were doing and the laws they were breaking.

There is either a competence problem or a lying problem with Eric Holder. I see no third alternative.

Forbes article on F&F with more of the same but at least someone is reporting on it and not letting it die.

One can only hope that Obama is impeached. In my opinion this is far, far worse than Watergate. Hundreds did not die from Nixon's debacle and yet he was impeached. I'm sick and tired of hearing from people that it was just a "bad decision" and there was no political agenda, E.g. under the radar gun control.

In the article it says, "Why a gunrunning scandal codenamed “Fast and Furious,” a program run secretly by the U.S. government that sent thousands of firearms over an international border and directly into the hands of criminals, hasn’t been pursued by an army of reporters all trying to be the next Bob Woodward or Carl Bernstein is a story in itself."

What I see to be a big problem is that the fence sitters and even non-progressive liberals mostly think this to be a Republican agenda because it is not all over their media. They think that if something of this magnitude really happened it would be in all of the media on a nightly basis. People I talk to that are not gun people have no or very little knowledge about this total debacle.

The reality is that people don't care enough to do anything about it. When the last administration put out lies about Iraq, THOUSANDS of our brave men and women who signed up to serve our country died. Not to mention the huge financial toll on our deficit. The frequency and unwillingness to retract the factually incorrect statements goes beyond "bad decision" and into the political agenda territory. Yet, hardly anyone in the public knows about the scope of it. There is no Grassley and Issa review for that issue, and there certainly aren't going to be any repercussions aside from the ones that we all continue to pay.

Information is power. These people control the media - hence no sustained focus, hence many people are both unaware, or at least unaware the extent to which this amounts to criminal acts.

Such as; accessory before, to and after, manslaughter - arguably murder, acts of terrorism - yes terrorism, perjury etc.

People better wake up to the fact that there is a shadow gov in this country, it is murderous. They need to rattle some cages in local, state, and fed gov to get these thugs out of their positions, root out their cronies elsewhere, and try/fry them as applicable. Without this this country is finished. You can not have the pretense of a legitimate gov and smooth all this over. It's one or the other.

Nixon wasn't impeached - he resigned under the threat. Only two US presidents have been impeached - Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton - neither was forced out of office.

AS much as I would like to see him gone, as far as I can see, Obama has committed no impeachable offense. Lying doesn't count unless it's under oath. Anyway the process would extend beyond the 2012 elections. Why not just vote him out?

Hay, Neverwinter, the big difference is all of congress voted for it ! :)
They didn't vote on having the administration lie to them. They voted on going into Iraq because the administration lied to them(barring the dominionists who already wanted to go). If you shoot a robber in self-defense for pulling an airsoft gun on you, are you at fault for acting on a credible threat to yourself? Or is it the fault of the person pulling the fake gun on you?

Neverwinter...

I agree and, to add to your analogy, it's like a "trusted person" to the side yelling, "Look!! That guy has a gun pointed at you!!", knowing all the while it's a fake, and knowing all the while you'll shoot in knee-jerk fashion.

Trust can be a very dangerous thing. And betrayal is not soon forgotten, we can only hope. Nothing should anger us more than being used and betrayed.

You all know what may be the redeeming feature of all this? I'll bet this was to be part of a bigger plan, I'll bet this whole thing was going to be the spear tip for his anti-gun campaign after re-election (because an incumbent has a VERY high chance of getting re-elected, you'd be stupid not to plan for it) when his only goal will be "legacy".

It was already panning out that way before this all blew up. CNN and MSNBC were reporting about how many weapons out of a bunch were from here, Mexico's president was calling for tougher laws here (because they don't have any problems down there) and all in all, it looked like a good anti-atmosphere. And then it all fell apart.

Funny thing is, as big as this is, it isn't being reported. The media blackout over this and other real stories is disgusting. Clinton got a bj in the oval office and almost got impeached, Obama and Bush both comitted serious criminal acts and nothing happens. Disgusting.

If a big enough storm was generated over this, then I bet the ATF would be disbanded. Somebody else would handle the licensing and what not, preferably a non-paramilitary unit, but at least that circus would be over.

Strykervet hit the nail on the head ! I was just about to post something smiler. F&F was just the beginning of BHO'S 2nd term anti-gun agenda. The MSM'S silence is deafening ! :fire:
