Keeping The Bar Raised.

Well, as a long time member of both TFL and THR, and someone who logs on every day, and read quite a few posts, I don't think that there has been the amount of deterioration that you indicate.

Yes, there are threads that get "outa control", and sometimes irrelevant threads. But I think the Moderators do a pretty good job of policing. There's gonna be a certain amount of that on a public board. I've also seen some VERY heated discussions, that went along for 5 or 6 pages, and while there may have been the occasional inapropriate comment, most were ignored, and the discussion went back on track quickly. When I say "heated", I mean that there were obvious HUGE disagreements (we see this in L&P the most.) Yet most posters stated their opinion, stated relevant facts, if any, and generally conducted themselves well. Again I think the Mods do an exceptional job in letting people express opinions, even if unpopular, up until the point where it becomes totally unreasonable (and I thank them for it!) I've personally been involved in a few of these heated debates, and was always allowed to give my opinion. If I disagreed with one individual, I was allowed to address their post, give my opinions/reasons/facts. Some would call that a personal attack. It's not, it's simply me stated my opinion. I've had others do the same to me. No harm, no foul. If they can't do it in a civilized fashion, well, that doesn't reflect on me, it just makes them look stupid. I'm a big boy, and all that. Sometimes I LIKE to see this type of debate, as I want to see what motivates people towards certain opinions.

In short: both TFL and THR are far and away the best gun forums around....I rarely visit others. Any issues that I see are A) to be expected and B) handled very appropriately by the moderators (and other members).

sm's reference to the 'Counterstrike people' is only aimed at a subset of those THR members who play video games. That subset consists of people who vociferously assert that they learn firearms skills and tactics applicable to the real world. Even when told by instructors with combat experience that have also played video games that nothing of value can be learned from the video games. Unless you are one of the subset who believes that one can become skilled in reality by playing Counterstrike, sm's comment was not aimed at you.

Various ways of keeping THR's signal to noise ratio from declining are being discussed. THR's mission is to promote RESPONSIBLE firearms ownership. That's non-negotiable, folks, and, really, it's not rocket science.

The old think twice, post once thing. Ask yourself this question: Will my post promote responsible firearms ownership or detract from that stance? Can the Brady Bunch use my post or this thread against RKBA? If your post will not promote responsible firearms ownership or will detract from that stance....if your post could be used by anti's as grist for their mill as they crow,"See, we told you...the gun nuts are a danger to us all!"...then probably it's best to just think about that and not post it here.

Now Oleg and the moderators want the maximum amount of freedom possible on this board. Unfortunately, too many members confuse freedom with license. These members either need to start their own forums or find another forum. The bar will not be lowered. Civility will be required in the future as in the past. Members will either support THR's mission...or they will not remain members. The staff would prefer to see this restraint be voluntarily assumed by our members rather than imposed. But assumed or imposed it will be in effect.

You're a fine example of a young man with the spelling/grammar skills of a 2nd grader.
Yes I am uneducated , I quit school as a young man when My grandfather died of cancer and the work on the family farm/ranch amounted to more than i could do and maintain school hours . Later I got a G.E.D. and moved on to other things in life. Now i am back on the farm with my family . So if my illiteracy offends anyone ill apologise for it and just keep doing my best as i have all my life LOL Oh and btw Thanks for the Young Man comment , heck i feel like i have been carded to buy a beer once more :neener:

I would like to thank Steve for kick-starting this discussion. I'd also like to thank the moderators, and the owners of THR and TFL for taking it seriously. Keeping the bar high or raising it back where it began is a goal we need to pursue.

I can't count the number of times I've started a reply to a thread but before posting realized that it didn't say anything worthy of the bandwidth. I had the thought in my head and it was just fine for it to stay there. Thinking more and posting less is another worthy goal.

As for the remarks about illiteracy, grammar and spelling errors, the thoughts came through the grammar and misspellings just fine. I use MS Word for long posts so I can get some use from the spell checker and grammar engine that Bill sold me.

Well, you're the one who called me a "keyboard kommando", don't act like you've had no part in this.

If you live in the US, you have no excuse. Education here is free and public. Unless you think the public education system is a failure. (Oh wait -- NO TEACHER BASHING!)

By age 16 you should have learned much better grammar/spelling skills. Unless you dropped out long before 16... which I think is illegal. But anyhow.

This forum is quite arrogant, the only reason it's so "wonderful" to you guys is because you're all the same. And too blind to see it. Yawn.

*goes back to GLOCKTalk.

Hellenistic Riot,

WE do not attack another member. It is okay to attack an idea, if done in a civil manner, never do WE attack a member. Please see THR Forum Rules.

May I suggest you spend some time reading older posts?

Or

Tell you what I could use. I need a current review of Eddie Eagle for my new thread here in General. Information on where to get, the information packets, videos/CDs, booklets , cost, everything. I would appreciate it, and THR would as well.

Thanks!

Steve

"Hellenistic Riot"

I just want to let you know that even if someone DID go to school, and comes onto the internet and spells badly, it may not because he is lazyand/or some 5 year old.

I my self, have a small learning disorder, its hard for me to learn how to "spell" I can read better then most, BUT i can spell as good as a 5-8th grader(and he could most likly beat be) and i am in college. I simply can not spell like normal people. I can read a word in a book 20times, then try to spell it later that night and i will have no idea what letters go were. No amount of studying will fix this.

So you may ask why dont people like me use spell check, well sometimes, i may spell a work wrong and not even know it, so it would not occur to me. Then again sometimes it limits the "big" words i can use because they are harder to spell. Sometimes i go to dictionary.com and use that as a spell check.

Trust me i wish i could spell better, but i cant, if you can then count your blessing not everone is as lucky as you. Now the only good thing about me is i have a very have good Spatial "sense" i am in the top 98% of the whole USA only 2% are better then me, were my spelling is in the low 30%. But you would never know it from my post here on the high road if you just judged me by me spelling.

This is not ment as me yelling at you, i am just letting you know that some poeple have good reasons

Plankowner Mode

As Justin has just shared - Mr. Riot will not be joining in further discussions - instead will leave with us reminders that there are those that do not wish to adhere to Rules Of Conduct they agreed to upon registering.

1. This thread has served its purpose.

a. "Civil Disobedience" for those that wish to disrupt THR/TFL - Meaning I disobeyed the disruptors.

b, "Atlas Shrugged" [Galt's Gulch] For those of like minded folks sharing Responsible Firearm Ownership, Civil Liberties - as expressed in THR/TFL Mission Statements. Meaning - I walked away to allow the disruptors to fall and to be with those holding that bar up high.

We need not waste anymore bandwith - I respectfully ask this thread be closed.

2. Before it is -

I still would appreciate a more current review of Eddie Eagle for my new thread here in General. Information on where to get, the information packets, videos/CDs, booklets , cost, everything. I would appreciate it, and THR would as well.

This would be a better use of THR bandwith and assist in raising the bar.

Respectfully,

Steve
