Kel Tec Sub 2000 40 S&W review

I've always wanted a sub2k, but never pulled the trigger on one. I ended up getting a screaming deal on a Ruger pc carbine so I've got a PCC. The sub2k always intrigued me though

I’m a lefty. I installed a red dot on a 45° offset mount mostly so I could shoot it with the ejection port rotated down and away from my face. I was eating a lot of gas shooting it upright. I didn’t use the rail; I used a side mounted Mlok base so I can still fold it.

With the $100 rebate program Keltec is running, now is a really good time to get into a Sub2000.

The first one I had was the Glock 19 compatible version. Worked just fine, but I found the grip too short to shoot comfortably. The second one I bought is the Glock 17 mag version, which fits a lot better.

The only things I’d caution people about — one of which is already mentioned here — is the difficulty you can have getting your head far enough down to get a sight picture. It feels unnatural. The stock rear sight does not lend itself well to rapid target acquisition.

The second thing to be aware of is watch the beard hair! There is a great tendency for whiskers to get caught between the butt plate and the bolt tube when you’re moving your head to get a sight picture. If you have a longer beard, there’s also a slight chance of it getting caught in the blowback operation between the bolt and the bolt tube.

I believe the MCarbo replacement rear sight should mostly fix then first problem, and their rubber tube cover should hopefully fix most of the second. I’m waiting for these parts to arrive, myself.

Aside from these issues, I am super pleased with this gun as a packable, ready to deploy carbine. If the compact foldability and low weight are attractive features to your use case, then the pros far outweighs the cons of this rifle. There are other PCCs that offer a better actual shooting experience, but this is the best option for a carbine you can just have with you and ready to go in a backpack in your car, if that kind of carry appeals to you.

Very accurate. Haven’t had a single failure to feed or anything. The trigger is far from pristine, but it’s also not too difficult to get acquainted with. Like many guns, just need to get a feel for the slop and know where the breaking point is. Most triggers are “good enough” if you just learn to get along with them.

Ouch. That’s no fun. My 14 year old son was trying to shoot mine the other day and I had him practicing working the bolt handle. He ended up getting the web of his hand caught between the bolt handle and the sharp edge of the bolt catch cut out. Kinda ruined his experience that day.

I've always liked those Sub2000s, my sister and I used to rent one at an indoor range in Florida.

That MCarbo mount looks like a worthwhile upgrade, I would have liked a red dot on the range gun.

Shot it a couple more mags today. Not to labor the point but this will definitely be a gun I only shoot occasionally. It’s just unpleasant for all the reasons explained above. It’s like a roofing nailer, I have one because it’s useful, but I don’t take it out on the weekends because it’s fun.

It’s very accurate and has been 100% reliable. I got this plastic case off Amazon to keep it in. It will probably ride around with me quite a bit.
