Here is my Kel Tec Sub2000 with a few mods. I included a Glock 23 for size comparison. I added a Sig Sauer STL-900l laser/light combo on front. Then I ordered a second picatinny rail and used a dremel to modify the fore-stock to accept it. On this I mounted a TacStar front grip. The sling is temporarily sewn for length, I will run it through a sewing machine. I haven't shot it yet, but hope to tomorrow! This is a fun and inexpensive little carbine (one you don't mind taking a dremel to) and should be a great plinker. Also plan to use it as my primary tent gun for camping this year.
What do you think?

LOL, how could I have forgot to include the caliber? No, this is the 40 cal built to accept Glock mags.

Well, if I were more familiar with Glocks, I'd have realized the 23 is a .40 and that you probably got the Sub2000 in the same. Learn every day!;) Thanks for clarifying though.

I always thought those were cool guns.

I don't think the sling serves much of a purpose, unless you're going to open carry it. It would normally either be broken down in your backpack, or out to shoot, right? I also don't think the fore grip serves much of a purpose. But the flashlight and Hogue condom grip are nice touches.

I think I would prefer normal length magazines too, but that is just a matter of preference.

I wasn't sure about the sling either until I put it on. Being a righty, I put my right arm and head thru and rest it on my left shoulder. It lays nicely and comes up to the ready very quickly which is nice during tactical drills. Also we do a lot of camping in bear country, we were in Yellowstone last year when the fatal grizzly attacks occurred, so there may be times when it will be handy to have at the ready. It does fit nicely folded in my laptop backpack sleeve and that gives relatively fast access. The front grip is mainly for curb appeal, but I will find out tomorrow if it adds any fun-factor to plinking. I think it will. As a Marine, I can't help thinking that those magazines are way to small, but it is a personal preferences. Great catch on the Hogue grips, I forgot that too. I think it is a must-have on the Sub2000s and the fact that they don't come standard would be my only gripe.
Thanks for the input!

I'm not sure of the country of origin, but they are after-market. At $12 a pop for 31 rounders, I was willing to give it a chance. These are for plinking after all. I just put 40 rounds (20 at a time) each thru them and didn't get a failure to feed yet. I will bump this up after they loosen a bit. We'll see how they hold up in the long run, but if one wears out prematurely I guess I'll let go of another $12 to replace it... I have several Glock 15 rounders for defensive carry.

The front grip does increase the feel and fun factor. I would definitely recommend adding it. Today is overcast so I had no trouble picking out the laser by looking over the rear peep and acquiring the “dot” thru the front shroud. After the rain stops I will sit down and zero it in.

Fun gun and well worth the price. If you want to get a gun that you can trick out tactically on the cheap, give this a serious look. First day out of the blocks and I already have three nephews asking their wives if they can get one. Where’s my commission Kel Tec?

ah, the sub2000. One of my very favorites from my collection. Top 3. I have the same; Glock magazine config, .40S&W.

I bought 20 of the korean 31 round magazines last year (from botachtactical, I think they were called "victory" brand ?), and they run like tops! You have to use a LULA to load them for the first few times, man are they tough to load, but after a bit, all's well. I recommend running them at about 27 or so rounds instead of 31. I have 0 failures at 27 or less. More than that, I've had some FTF on some of them. They are superb for the money. I also have plenty of 22 mags since I have a 22. The 23 mags won't work, so i color coded my mags with fingernail polish dabbed on the bottom.

Fold it in half, slap a few mags in a soft briefcase, drop a glock 22 in there as well, you're totally set.

eta: pachmayr grip glove for S&W sigma fit perfect

eta2: lucentlacky: i ended up selling a couple after folks tried mine as well, lol. The first to go and get the last one at the store was my dad! Lucent eh, I used to be a part of NetCare consulting division when Lucent bought International Network Services back in 99 or whatever. Sorry, tangent. memories.

I have three of the korean "Victory" company's 31 round .40 caliber Glock magazines, and while they don't feed correctly in a Glock 22, they feed just fine in my Sub2000. It probably has to do with the Sub2000's longer cycling time, giving the magazine spring a little bit longer to push the next round up into place before the bolt catches it.

makes sense. They run fine in my 22 and 23, but only if I underload them ~26 cartridges. The sub2k is more forgiving, probably for reasons you stated.

No, they don't
run like tops!
if you've
had some FTF on some of them.
Good if you under-load them? Maybe that's why the new Glock factory versions are only holding something like 22 or 23?

KCI/Kahn/Victory are all basically the same thing. I have some 9mm versions that do fine, others I've had to convert to inert training mags or use them for malf drills on the range.

Lucent eh
Yeah, you got me. 24 years and counting. Started with AT&T - Lucent - now Alcatel-Lucent (oui oui).

You are right on the money with the General Geoff about the Victory mags from botachtactical. That's where I scored the Sig Sauer laser/light for $87. This thing is crazy bright and the strobe light is a weapon itself. I have another on the way since I stole this one off my XD-45. I read a lot of complaints about botachtactical, and their customer service sucks but you just can't beat their prices.

Thanks for the insight on the mags, I was going to do some research on the optimal capsity (I knew it wouldn't be 31) but I'll aim for the 27.

My son wants me to put a youtube video up with the foregrip mod to add the second rail. If I do, I'll post the link.

(Heavy sigh) I've been on a waiting list at 3 different distributors for a 9mm Sub2K for over a year now ...

I am thinking of building a few out and selling them unfired. What caliber do you think will sell better, 9mm or 40 Cal?

Any interest out there?

We did some night shooting last night and were shocked by the lack of muzzle flash. We filmed it and watched back and the flash was nearly imperceptible. The laser beam was not visible until a round was fired and it illuminated the gases. Pretty cool stuff!

Good looking gun! I've always liked Sub2000's because of their akwardly cool looking shape.

My 9mm Sub2K (also takes glock mags).

I've added a folding foregrip and one of those Streamlight flashlight + laser things in front of it since taking this photo. This photo was basically just to show off the offset scope.

The scope itself is an old 4x Tasco Pronghorn. Just a matter of pure dumb luck that my dad still had that thing in a drawer of his desk somewhere, because the length of the scope is just perfect to reach back over the receiver. It's mounted with Daniel Defense offset rails, and as you can see, is offset just enough that the rifle will still fold up.

Do the Korean mags fit real tight in the mag well of your rifles? I had to so some serious sanding on my mags to get them to load in my Sub without having to force them. When you have the gun, two 31 round mags, a G22, and 6 G22 mags loaded in the carry bag, it weighs around 30 some pounds......chris3

Very nice RX-178! The fore-grip I think is a must. How do you like the picatinny rail fore end? It was hard to tell from the site, but it didn't look like a good fit on the muzzle side. I'll have to research the offset mounts as I am thinking of building one out with a red-dot scope. I haven' had a chance to check your site yet, but its on my list!

Your right about the weight Chris3, but it sure if fun lightening the load, huh?! The 31 rounders are not super tight in the Sub, but are very tight in my G23. Someone told me that they aren't supposed to fit, but they just do... barely. I may sand one a bit just to have for my G23 as a novelty.

I'm trying to source some rifles and if I come across the 9mm Beretta, I'll PM you McLeod.

The picatinny rail forend just clamps to the barrel. And it REALLY needs loctite on the mounting screws to work properly. It's nowhere near the same level of stability or quality as AR-15 quad rails, but from my experience, for pistol caliber weapons like this, it doesn't make any real difference.

If you can find someplace that actually -has- 9mm glock mag sub2K's for sale, please let me know.

As I said, as an FFL I've been waiting for ANY for over a year now.
