So I'm looking at getting a Kel-Tec Sub2000 next year in the 9mm version. This would be a plinker and a survival rifle to go into the car trunk kit. I like the fact that it accepts Glock 17 mags as most of the departments I am applying to use them as duty weapons so good chance I'll have a lot of mags lying around.

Opinions of this rifle? It's bit more of a punch then a survival .22 but retains the compactness that I like.

If I could buy one of those, I would. I recently had the opportunity to try one of those out in Florida, with the Glock 30 rnd mag. I found it accurate and easy to use. The fact that it folds is a real bonus and is part of why I like it.
Only two things that I don't like:

1) It isn't ear muff friendly
2) It will be difficult to put a red dot sight on it AND retain the ability to fold.

I understand some folks on the KEL-Tec owners forum have side-mounted some red dots on these, not seen any pics though.
I'm sure someone will be along to post a link to that forum.

I used to think that, but as I learned they make mounts that will fold off to the side so that you can have a red dot and retain the ability to fold it.

For what it is, I really like the Sub 2000.

Like the gun-however being a lefty causes a bit of a problem.
Definetly the Glock version with high cap mags=very fun!:D

I had a SUB2000 in a 9mm for awhile, and wasn't that impressed. It was quite picky on ammo, wouldn't take some factory loads which would feed in everything else I have. Overall it's fun to plink with...

I have a Sub 2000 in 9MM. It is a great little carbine. Easy to shoot well and plenty accurate.

I tried to make a composite pic for you, comparing it with an AR, but the perspective between the two shots is a bit off. Maybe someone else will be kind enough to post a photo of a subby alongside a ruler.

Who sells those?

Does it really only weigh 4lbs? How compact is it?

This article has a nice comparison pic of the sub2k and other rifles. in the pic it falls in between the folded AK and an AR!

Who sells those?

Kel-tec sells them. just go to http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/cart/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=8_17

I have a sub2k in .40 and love it! Mine eats anything I feed it. the accuracy is pretty good for a little 4lb 30" long plastic rifle;) I can hit a 6" metal target with every shot @ 50 yards. I can hit the same target ~70% of the time at 75 yards. For me that is mor than acceptable accuracy. I have only shot it out to 100 yards...but at that range you could make COM with ease.

I owned two Sub2000's in the past and I sold them because I was not shooting them.

I just picked up another Sub2000 two months ago. The 9mm version is very difficult to get because Kel Tec builds their firearms in batches. You can find the 40 Sub2K but the 9mm is tough right now.

As far as a red dot...you could always buy a Blue Force Gear front sight to replace the factory front sight...it has a picatinny rail underneath to mount say an M6X, TLR2 or Surfire with light/laser combo.

ETA: You should also look at the Hi Point 995 carbine...the only drawback to the Hi Point is that they use 10rd proprietary mags, but the 995 is suppose to be more accurate versus the sub2k. I own a 995, but I have not shot it, so I couldn't tell you how accurate they are compared to the sub2k.

The sub2k's that I owned in the past were more accurate than I thought they would be, if that makes a difference in your decision.

Comparison pic with Ar 15. It's 29 1/4" long open.

I just got back from the range with my sub2k. Here is a pic of my target from 50 yards rested from a bench w/ open sights. Sorry for the pick quality, all I had was my cell phone.

The folding scope mounts have a bad reputation for not returning to zero.

Kel-Tec makes and sells a piece to attach to the bottom of the handguard if you wish to mount a laser.

If you're a lefty, your cheek will get hit by gas and particles from the ejection port.

Still, a fun gun for the price.

i had two of them, but a guy three days ago offered me 650$ for one of my 9mm kel tec's so i took it:D, now i just have one its the glock 17 model, they are great guns, even better if you get the better handgaurd, but the prices on these has already doubled and doesnt look like the price will level out anytime soon, and thats if you can even find one, heres some pics of my sub 2k

A hoot! I'[m so glad I was able to find a Glock 9mm version a while back before the prices got stupid crazy.
I have the folding scope mount on mine, with a nice shotgun scope, and it's deadly accurate. I find that it needs a bit more punch from 9mm ammo to cycle reliably- that's inherent in the blowback design- WIN white box is about the lowest it can handle. I reload a sort of +p for it, and it eats that up like candy.

What's not to love about a scoped carbine with 30-rd magazines that can fit into a laptop bag?

I would love to get one but the prices and availability now are poor. Another great option is a Hi Point 995 in an ATI stock. Not as nearly compact and only 10 rounds but is accurate and still cheap $165(carbine)+$55(stock) and available most everywhere.

You can home-brew a removable mount various ways. I used a Weaver converta-mount originally intended for a mossy 500. You have to be a bit creative to get the baseplate square, as the foregrip tapers somewhat

I did a somewhat long post on it here: http://www.ktog.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1193021651/15 (post #18 in the thread... )

This is a Beretta 92 grip version. I (to my astonishment) found that the ProMag 33 round magazines for this actually work without any screwups (so far). I normally wouldn't touch a ProMag, but gave it a try this one time based on comments from a few others who had picked one up ...
