The lanes are fairly narrow at the indoor range I frequent and I was wondering if the handgun muzzle needed to be to the side of the unit or if it could be above it.

When standing, it would have to be pretty high off the table and would block part of your forward view.

I was wondering if it could be below your field of view or if you literally had to position the firearm to the side.

I don't know. There is a brand new indoor range here and I would like to be able to chronograph there, but I am not willing to make a $559 bet on it.
Call 'em up.

The folks at LabRadar would be a better choice to answer the question but I suspect that you could shoot above or below the unit and get it to trigger.

You might have to have the unit turned on it side or provide some alternate protection from muzzle blast.

The LabRadar triggers by acoustics and there are some alternate methods that can be plugged into the unit to trigger the unit.

I'd have to guess that the indoor range may cause some problems getting a good reading due to the signal reflecting off the walls and back stop. But, again, LabRadar would be the best source of information.

I've only used my LabRadar outdoors and have been happy with it.

The LabRadar I've used can be triggered by sound or by doppler. In doppler mode it detects the projectile as it enters the radar beam. At a range with closely spaced shooters it might be possible that it register the projectile of the person at the adjoining position.
